Just about to undertake fitting my car with a towbar 2l td sl. I have managed to get a used audi wiring loom for this model has anyone fitted towbar electrics to the 2011 onwards to a saloon. I am to fit the towbar and electrics and get a local auto electrician to code it. Has anyone done this and can you share any detail /pics

Have a look on the PF jones website, Sucuri WebSite Firewall - Access Denied (www.pfjones.co.uk) they have detailed instructions for the fitting of the towbar and also the electrical diagrams, in particular the Westfalia electrics who manufactured the control unit for Audi.
But yes once fitted your going to need the car coded.

You presumably already have the fuse location in boot, and supply loom to it? So you need to add loom from trailer control unit to the green fuse bay there, take loom to trailer N-pin socket, etc? Which bits do you need help with?

I have just got the loom off ebay and awaiting delivery of the towbar....I have fitted the universal ones to my 05 sportage in the past very basic cam system on that car . Just thought using the genuine loom will be a better way to go as this car has parking sensors.... Ill get back to you all once I've stripped the liners out of the boot and work from there.. Tried to find links to see if anyone had fitted one of these on net i could only find a6 c6 vid on youtube so hopefully this will be a reference for anyone else fitting one...to their a6 c7

I took a quick look at that PDF. It looks like a good match to the standard wiring, such as the use of fuse positions 1, 2 and 3 in pic 23 - although the red wires have different trace colours. One thing that I noticed is that pic 22 seems to be referring to a black fuse holder, which is correct for LHD but is shown as green on RHD in the OEM diagrams. Various combos of black. blue, green, yellow, etc are used for each of LHD / RHD, so easy to get confused there.

Not sure what that red / black wire tap is for. There seem to be several wires of that colour potentially installed, so might be another one to untangle left / right / options on when you get there.

I fitted the Westfalier kit from PF Jones, and found the tow bar part easy to understand. BUT the electrical pictograms were an absolute nightmare to understand despite me being a professional electrician! I spent several hours trying to work out what they meant, and even then I wasn't 100% sure, so I phoned PF Jones, and we talked through every picture and found out I was actually correct in the end.
Give them a call, as they really know their stuff, and will save hours of head scratching and uncertainty. This wiring is actually easy to do with decent instructions, and needs to be absolutely correct, or it won't work, or something will get fried.

I absolutely HATE pictogram instructions, and they are the scourge of modern society, simple things are made so complicated due to the ambiguous mature of these. I often throw them away and use my initiative.

The genuine towbar that swivels with genuine electrics from audi comes with a very thick book, but instructions still need reading several times. It took me a while to decipher them but the coding was the biggest heartache. Even connected to Germany, it refused to code properly. In the end Audi supplied a different svm code for my car and it coded in under 20mins.

BTW, I forgot to mention the coding!
PF Jones instructions only give the code for the CAN gateway to accept the new towbar ECU supplied in the kit. This only gets basic functions, ie stop, tail indicators fog light etc. Most of the other ECU's in the car need recoding to get things working properly. PF Jones have a plug in re-coder that does everything automatically and blindly, same as an Audi dealer. For DIY, you'll need Ross-Tech VCDS or similar, and the long coding numbersfor all the ECU's involved. IIRC my car need 9 ECU's recoded.
Post a full auto-scan of all the ECU's on the Ross-Tech forum, and someone will provide all the codes needed.

So the mechanical part of the fitting is now complete....The wiring in the rear drivers side (UK) is next....

That looks easier to follow than the first set you linked. At pic 22 for example if shows the black vs. green fuse holders for LHD vs. RHD. Looking at the consistency of numbering of wiring items from pic 12 onwards looks useful as well.

Which diagram in which of the PDFs matches that? It comes through pretty small. Maybe put it in a gallery photo, or attach as ZIP? If you can spend a bit of time with MS Paint or something putting numbers against connectors in the pic it might help, or list the colours in each connector. Did yuo say it was an original loom? Any part number on it?

A bigger picture in link. The harness came off a scrap 2013 Audi-A6-C7-Avant-Towbar-Wiring-Loom-Harness i cant find a part number on it just took sellers word for it.

The attachment 37109 link doesn't work. Is it set for public access? No need if it the same as the other link.

Things like the "floating" fuse holders (rather than picking up positions 1-3 in the green standard holder) and relay (not used in OEM loom, as the 6mm cable to fuse box handles power load) make it look like a generic rather than OEM loom. Do you have something for A and B to plug into? Looks like there should be some control box or other.

Comparing your pictures to the diagrams in the PDFs yuo linked it looks quite like the first PF Jones one.

Missing the extra loom at pic 17 (because they had red block like you, or it was used but leaving it behind was easiest for whoever removed it).

Missing the control box for plug B at pic 25.

Relay looks extra though, so not sure what's going on there. Maybe compare with generic kit to see if it has it?

This one appears to have the relay https://www.pfjonesebay.co.uk/instructions/AU039D1U.pdf
as it wasnt described as 3rd party i have two options send it back as not described or go to pf jones to see if they have the other bits and get them to code it?
i have just found these other connectors Double ended as pictured.

So you found those extra bits of loom already with you, but not the control box? Ask them if they can get it from the vehicle?

graylinghunter
28-06-2020, 02:58 PM
i will ask...it was taken from scrap vehicle so it might not be about....pf jones could possibly supply one. or just buy full 13 pin kit all else fails what do you think? The extra bits bar control box had slipped out of sight under spare wheel......when i ran in yesterday due to heavy showers. So it looks like just missing a control box...

also found ecs also have same kits with model number ECS Electronics | Towbar wiring kits (https://www.ecs-electronicsuk.co.uk/en/towbar-wiring-kits.html?ECSstoreId=3&manufacturer=3787&model=3849&type=24446&buildyear=2012) © ECS Electronics B.V.Pag. 2

The journey to self install the wiring stops here sadly i cant buy the control box and the coder wont guarantee his work on a used loom.. best i can do is photograph the finished professional install.

VAG-Abound

Sounds like a pain if you had it all fitted and the module was water damaged, etc. If the ECS kits are the same will none of these fit: ECS Electronics | Modules - Spare parts? (https://www.ecs-electronicsuk.co.uk/en/spare-parts/modules.html?)

If not, sorry to hear it turned out like that.

EDIT: This page suggests they'd sort you out with a suitable module: https://www.ecs-electronics.nl/en-spare-parts, probably one of the 5F0xx units.

Hi All, I'm new to this forum so please forgive me if this has been asked over and over. I have fitted a TB to my 2012 A6 Avant and have a bypass relay to fit for a std 7 pin socket as only towing a trailer. I have the side and brake light wiring colours for the n/s and o/s (RHD car). I have the reverse light colour but cannot isolate the fog light wire.

When looking behind the rhs tailgate hinge I have several grey wires all live when the fog lights are on. I didn't want to pick up on one of these as it's strange to have so many live wires for one function.

This is what I have so far
NSR light cluster
Grey/white trace side and brake
Black/white trace ns indicator.

Osr light cluster
Grey side and brake
Black/ green trace is indicator
Black/blue trace. Reverse

WHERE IS THE FOG PLEASE ....

Many thanks
Simon

I'm not sure either way, but are they simple 12V on / off lines for each function? None of the using one set of bulbs when boot lifted, and another set when closed?

EDIT: And do you have LED or old-fashioned lights?
