Pre FL , MY 2012 , 2.0tdi S line

Yesterday evening I turned the car over (headlight switch set to auto ) and discovered no colour display between the dials, no cockpit illumination, none on the needles of the Rev counter / speedo and petrol/ temperature segments

The brightness knob next to the headlight switch does nothing when It’s turned to min or max - it doesn’t alter the brightness on the centre console window switches etx

I Did a scan on the “17 instruments “ module - no fault codes.

I should add that when the car initially starts the needles and background illumination for the cockpit briefly light up and then go out.

Warning lights are ok.

Does anyone have any ideas on this ? Many thanks

This morning ,

I turned the engine on , Colour display working , temp and Fuel segments lit , needles lit and dials lit etc.

Great or so I thought.

I put the car in the garage , covered the light / rain sensor to simulate darkness.

I’m assuming the rain/light sensor is working as when the Headlight switch is set to auto , the headlights come on as they should , BUT NO cockpit illumination at all just like yesterday evening.

Just a guess could it be that the “brightness control “ knob on the headlight switch has gone faulty ??

I’ve managed to solve the problem.

The dimmer control (on the headlight switch) wasn’t dimming the the rest of the car.
There were no fault codes on the light /rain sensor.
So I did think perhaps the dimmer switch on the headlight switch had gone faulty......almost bought a new headlight switch this morning!

Spent ages looking at the “Instruments” module and under adaption looked at the “night” dimming characteristics settings thinking they may of lost their settings.

Then went into central electrics and noticed “interior light dimming via instrument cluster via CAN” was “ticked”
I have un ticked this and now everything is working perfectly!

no idea how it became “ticked” - the only thing I can think of is my laptop died yesterday when I was in the module (so therefore i was unable to exit the module in the proper fashion.), so perhaps the module had a funny five?
