Purchased a “recon” gearbox about a year ago and there is a noise whilst in neutral coming from the gearbox.

The noise goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed.

Sounds is similar to rough bearings.

My first guess was possibly input shaft bearings.

Listening with the bonnet open and getting my ear by the gearbox the sound appears to be coming from the far side of the casing (furthest side away from engine).

Can also here it whining when coming down to a stop when approaching junctions / traffic Lights etc..

One of the output diff seals is wheeping oil too - could this be the culprit? Easy fix?

Could something in the box be damaged upon assembly of the box to the engine?

If you hang the gearbox with not enough support so effectively just hanging on by the splined input shaft? This could cause damage?

Tempted to strip the box down but doubt this is a good idea.

Any help would be appreciated.

This can be the clutch or the bearing unit which has been revised a few times, now part number 02T 311 206 J at £71.18, BUT it is a strip down job to install.

I replaced the whole clutch on the engine side with a LUK kit (clutch, pressure plate, and release bearing).

So guess the noise might be the part you mention above?

Is this the unit that sits at the back of the gear housing (item 21 in ETKA? - mounting with groofed ball bearing) and supports the input and output shaft?

A rectangular sealed unit with 2 bearings?

What sort of price am i looking at if box was removed by myself and just provided for repair only?

Is this a common problem with the 0AG box? What other gremlins does it have?

Yes the amusingly misspelled grooved bearing, or grooved bearing. To get to the bearing, replace and rebuild by a gearbox specialist would be roughly six hours work, as long as they don’t find anything else wrong in there.
