First, the background to my 2 questions.

Went into TPS today for oil and filter for my BiTdi but the didn’t have usual Quantum Gold long life but they did have Platinum annual change. It seems that Fuchs, the supplier of Quantum, had a fire at their factory and VAG may be switching to Castrol to maintain supply.

My car has been on long life servicing since I’ve had it at 27k in Feb 2017 but I have it serviced to my specs by a friend who works for Merc (in the Merc workshop) using VAG parts every year. The car has done 46k now so I’m only doing 6-7k mikes a year.

So here’s the questions:

1. Should I continue to use long life oil or switch to platinum or equivalent?

2. If I can’t get Quantum or Fuchs, what oil do you recommend and why.

I’m not bothered about the cost as the car is a keeper.

Thanks

J

Keep with any 507.00 approved or not as it's the highest quality oil with highest oil performance peramiters .

I've been using Asda 507.00 oil made by Tetrosyl in my PD .

If it were rubbish a camshaft lobe and bucket tappet would be goosed by now .

And please, please change it every twelve months or 10k miles, (whichever comes soonest).

Perhaps it's just that I've been tinkering with cars for 4 decades but I'll always remember an engineer saying that oil is cheap, engines are expensive.

My twopenneth is that if she's a keeper then I'd be changing it every year with the correct spec.

Might be worth a chat with "oilman" from Opieoils - one of our site sponsors.

Andy.
