Passat B6 both rear speed sensors fault.

Hi folks,

My friend & I are currently baffled by an ABS problem on his B6 (built 2010/registered 2011) 1.6 Passat Bluemotion Estate;

These are the symptoms:

a) ABS activating whenever brake pedal operated.
b) ABS warning light on constantly.
c) ESP warning light on constantly.
d) parking brake warning light on constantly.
e) Engine 'Stop Start' disabled. Warning light comes on when car stops.
f) Steering wheel warning light comes on temporarily when ignition key removed and 'Steering Lock See Workshop' message appears temporarily.

Our actions:

1) Read car with VCDS. Got left rear (l/r) and right rear (r/r) faults along with ESP/parking brake/engine 'stop/start.
We think the ESP/parking brake/engine 'stop/start faults stem from the sensor faults?
2) We swapped the left rear sensor for a known good one (used a sensor from a donor car with no issues).
3) Still both sensor faults.
4) Removed both rear bearings. Tiny amount of play in one. Both sensor magnetic discs in good condition.
5) Checked continuity between l/r sensor to ABS module multiplug. Seems ok.
6) Visually inspected individual wires around ABS module multiplug. No evidence of corrosion. Cleaned with contact cleaner.
7) Removed ABS module and sent to ECUTESTING. No fault found.
8) Removed engine management ECU. No evidence of corrosion. The surface of the unit was wet but the plug pins/sockets seemed fine. Cleaned with contact cleaner.

We're now out of ideas other than a wiring fault somewhere in the loom/s.

Any ideas from anyone with experience of a two sensor fault will be much appreciated.

He then had a look at the VCDS report and supposed/suspected that you might be onto something here.

The ABS section of the report gave fault code 01200;

We're now suspecting a supply issue to the ABS module?

Without a wiring diagram this won't be easy I reckon, so I'm hoping to find:

1) A wiring diagram.

2) Any advice on the physical location of any fuses/wiring/connectors between the power supply and the ABS module and any suggestions of where to inspect.

The battery seems fine and was starting the car no problem whilst the faults were present.

The alternator must be ok because it is keeping the battery charged. Also, the battery warning light would be warning that the battery wasn't receiving charge if it was failing. No such symptoms.

I’m with Mitch, the battery would be my first suspect, I have seen many modern batteries and the efficient starter motors used throw people because they crank like everything is OK but the voltage is too low.

As side panel fuses do not go up to number 54 it may be SB54 in the engine compartment fuse box - a 50amp fuse for the Glow Plug Control Module?

We've also noticed that the headlights are switching themselves on and off for no apparent reason.

Hi Crasher, thanks for the reply, however I don't believe it has anything to do with the abs sensors. At the moment I'm not getting any power to the steering column lock which can't disable the immobilizer.

Hi Crasher, previous scan still relevant, after some digging on the net forums and trying to make sense of wiring diagrams (I am absolutely confused) I think it's the CCM not providing 12V to the red/yellow wire of the ESCL.

Possibly need a new CCM and coding.
