Hi all,

I was hoping someone might be able to help me.

I have a 2000 A4 1.8 20V (non-turbo) SE Manual, which has covered just 48,000 miles. I have recently noticed that the performance of the car just isn't what it used to be and it is also not as efficient on fuel as it used to be.

The car used to feel brisker and used to do 27 to 28 mpg round town if you drove smoothly. Now it struggles to do better than 23 to 24 mpg.

I have just had a new clutch fitted and although that has helped, it still does not drive as well as it used to.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing the problems would be much appreciated. Also, it would be useful to learn what kind of economy figures other people are achieving.

Many thanks in advance,

Manoj

It is probably the temperature sensor and/or the MAF. I would try the temp sensor first tho, under £20 will see the green updated replacement.
Fixed mine when i had problems

manojluhar, Check your air filter. It might be clogged. Also your MAF reading might be wrong.

Hi all,

Update on developments...

I have had the car put on a diagnostic computer again and this time, the only thing that came up was that there may be some issue with the engines "cam sensor".

So, in summary, possible causes of the problem are:

1) Cam sensor;
2) MAF sensor.

Has anyone had problems with the cam sensor before? And if so, is this likey to cause the problems that I have been experiencing i.e. sluggish performance and poor economy?

If the cam sensor is likely to be the cause, I think I will replace that first and then if that does not solve it, replace the MAF as well. My understanding is that the cam sensor should be cheaper the replace than the MAF. Is this in line with people's understanding?
