Hi all

Recently purchased this as a little project to be my daily when it's sorted. It's 2005 A3 2.0 TDI, believe it is the 140hp BKD engine.

The car starts and drives lovely (when it works) - no issues i've noticed, no faults, no codes, returns 40-50mpg with a heavy foot even.

However, the car might start on the button every time for 3-4 days in a row, then it will refuse to start without squirting easy start into the intake. It cranks fine, but absolutely will not fire. Once it does start thanks to the easy-start however, it runs absolutely fine and will continue to work for a few days again without any hint of a problem.

I have VCDS and cannot find anything untoward. No fault codes. I haven't looked at all measuring blocks in vivid detail, but when it has been running i've tried to spot any sensors not moving etc. and can't see anytihng blindingly obvious.

When it is playing up, i've tried some trouble shooting. Again, no codes on VCDS either. I've tried removing the MAF and unplugging the coolant temp sensor as i know these can cause issues, no joy. I've also tried using a set of jump leads connected to my battery with another vehicle running which made no difference.

The previous owner has had the injectors refurbished and changed glow plugs too with no joy.

Given easystart fixes it, and its purely a starting issue, i am thinking it must be fuel delivery related?

I have seen quite a few threads suggesting a common fault is the Tandem pump or it's gasket. Is this easy to rule out or check? Here for reference: https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/a3-2-0tdi-sport-will-not-start.55041/

Thanks in advance

Personally I don’t feel it is possible to refurbish those injectors but that aside, you could do with assessing the cranking rpm. To do this you disconnect the head harness and crank the engine over with VCDS in measuring blocks. You will need to do this for about 30 seconds because as you start cranking, VCDS will drop out and take a few seconds to come back into measuring blocks. If this figure is below 280 rpm, I would suggest a new starter IF the battery is 100% good, above 280 rpm, remove the injectors and check the seat faces for marking as per the VAG TPI pictures below.
