View Full Version : Coolant erratic temperature

My coolant has had an issue over the past few months whereby the gauge is showing fluctuation from 60 degrees up to 90(ish) degrees. It can then can stabilise for a few days like there no problem or continue going up and down. There doesn’t seem to be any trend on how long it takes to go up or down or how long it will stay at that temperature. Sometimes it’s fine for days/weeks and then a few days later it starts again. Doesn’t seem to make any difference on driving style or distance travelled. I’m thinking a faulty thermostat but I’ve also read coolant sensor. Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks

Ignore whatever the gauge says, modern VAG car gauges show an arbitrary figure designed to stop people fretting about minutiae over the readings, if the gauge is moving around and doing odd things, have the sensor replaced and if the issue persists, the thermostat.

Brilliant thanks. There’s only 1 sensor to replace?

Yes for the gauge, there is another on the radiator but that is for the engine ECU, which year and engine code?

Ok it’s a 2008 239bhp. Not sure on engine code I’ll have to check tonight. Thanks
