I have a 2002 2.0 GTi (petrol) and it's just told me to check the oil. :( Whatever the problem is that has led to it, I expect it will want a toppy up of oil at the very least. I have vague thoughts in the back of my mind that I've read on here about it being absolutely crucial that the right oil is used in these engines. I know the info must be here somewhere and I have tried to look but... :1zhelp: How do I know what bottle of stuff to buy in the garage again? :Blush2:

The simplest way would be to buy from a VAG dealer. Some motor factors/garages don't seem to realise that in some modern engines the oil grade and quality is critical.

Yep. That would be best.
However, VAG dealer is 40 miles away and I won't get there till weekend as I work full time elsewhere. I've just checked and it's not showing me any oil at all on the dipstick. The handbook says VW500 oil. I don't expect that to be particularly helpful when faced with the myriad of 10w-40 and 5w-30 type labels on the bottle.
I'll have to go on the basis that some oil is better than no oil :(

you will do more damage driving around with not much oil in then if you stick any oil in,it will only be for afew days yeah until you get to vw to find out the right stuff

Surprisingly enough, the village garage did have oil with VW500 written on the side so I tipped some of that in :beerchug: It drove to work okay and I'll go out and check the oil level again soon once it's been sat still on a reasonably level surface for a while. There hasn't been any puddles of oil under my car but admittedly, I've never checked the level before.
Fingers crossed it's okay

you don't have to have a leak to lose oil, in the manual to your car, it will say that it is resonable to use up to 1 litre of oil per 800-1000 miles, this depends on the way you drive and driving conditions, such as town driving, towing or driving around with a lot of weight in your car. also if you keep putting your foot down hard from the light or on the straights. from the min mark on the dipstick to the max mark it is normaly 1 litre
