“Headlight Range Control Defective” after headlight removal

Hi,

Today I did some work on the power steering fluid reservoir on my 2010 A4 B8. To get at it I removed the passenger headlight and unplugged the cable from the left-hand side of the unit marked “ESP”. I reconnected that cable prior to starting the engine, but had to run it with the passenger headlight disconnected.

When I put it back together, I’m now getting a “Headlight Range Control Defective” warning on my dash when I start up, and it won’t go away.

I’ve tried disconnecting/reconnecting the headlight, and have fully removed and refitted it. The headlight itself appears to be working.

I connected a cheap diagnostic tool and it says there are no DTC codes, so I’m a bit flummoxed.

Any ideas?

Use a proper diagnostic system as the one you are using is probably only OBDII capable.

Good point. I googled for “proper diagnostic system” but didn’t get any results ;). The tool managed to get the car’s information, rev count, etc., but is there something extra that’s a different system for the diagnostic codes? What should I be looking for?

You need vcds or someone with vcds and probably recalibration of the lights is needed also.

VCDS is the easiest to use and ubiquitous.

I removed both my headlights to change bulbs then after a while wondered why my headlights were so low went in with vcds and you can bring them back up to level think the option was high delivery height and low or something like that and you also need to make sure you put it in the adjustment mode before moving the screws on the headlights
