Hi Folks!
Just wonder if anyone has retrofitted this kit
Audi CarPlay Kits Archives - Unique Auto Developments (https://unique-ad.co.uk/product-category/audi-carplay-kits/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAvKzhBRC1ARIsANEXdgy_z2U3vOwVA2kBrL7 791c4ik4sF_Rtrk1Dh_e3KBPSuH-Wczv518oaAsdjEALw_wcB)
It apparently works with built in mmi systems and supports steering wheel and centre console buttons with MMI 3/4G . RMC only supports centre console buttons but still integrates directly with MMI native interface. I noticed that it’s available on AliExpress for about 80£ less but I would be afraid that possible return would be a problem.

AliExpress does not support PayPal only CC. Return shipping would be pricey also.

I decided to chance it with Aliexpress and ordered a wireless CarPlay compatible with RMC. Seller gave me 20% discount.

I will post pictures and update once fitted.
I’ve seen similar kits fitted before and not to put a downer on it the sound quality was pretty poor and there’s so much to take apart and installed correctly. It’s essentially bypassing the MMI unit and displaying CarPlay on the rmc screen.
I’ve had the rmc and the MMI high and both systems integrated well with my iPhone as an iPod and through Bluetooth. Not sure why there is such an obsession with getting CarPlay. I’ve got it in my current car and don’t use it at all as the factory MMI works really well with my iPhone.

Hopefully, it will work well. I want spotify, waze, google maps, tune in to work directly on the screen without a need to touch the phone.
Just remember this does not integrate with the DIS so you won’t get directional information for nav and street names. Also the mic needs to placed properly, around map lights or a-pillar,if you want to chat while on the move as the MMI Bluetooth will not work while phone is in CarPlay mode.

This actually integrates with MMI directly. It uses native MMI MIC and supports MMI control buttons on the steering wheel and the central console.

I chose DHL shipping. Should be here within 7 days.
I asked few more questions and it actually uses aftermarket microphone, not the MMI. Good thing is that it uses MMI controls. It also supports reversing camera. Apparently, it can also do 360 view. Have not seen it though anywhere.

My understanding is that the wireless kit I purchased is the only one working with RMC which I have in my car. If you have MMI 3G or 4G it integrates better and uses MMI microphone. You can also get cheaper CarPlay kit which uses lightning cable instead of wireless.

Pretty cool screen. However, I have bad experience with those android auto infotainment systems. I purchased one for VW CC in the past and I was not happy. It did not fully integrate with the car and steering wheel control. DIS integration was also poor. Analog radio was not working correctly, Bluetooth phone had very bad quality.
I’m hopeful for CarPlay kit since it elevates existing MMI functionality instead of replacing it. Hopefully I will not regret it.

I fitted one of the UK kits to my a6 before Xmas and I'm over moon with it. Took about 1 Hour to fit and works very well with std controls. Even voice button on steering wheel work. As for sound quality, I have been disappointed with my bose system since I got car 2 years ago but now it much better using spotify and car play. Waze works great. Only down side is you get no track info on sash but then again my wife's gti is same. Lack of touch screen is not a problem. Some people complain about £300 cost but I think it's worth every penny.

The RMC from what I remember is more complicated than MMI 3G - the hidden green menu is much more limited in what you can do I.e. not much!
To enable AMI, I think the unit has to be parameterized with VCP or ODIS rather than it just being a coding thing but I could be wrong. Kufatec do a coding dongle for AMI but it's €100 :( Might be worth giving VAG Car Coding a shout instead.

I have the AMI enabled and ordered AMI aux cable which will solve the problem. However, this is not what it supposed to be.
For now, I have IPhone connected to MMI Bluetooth and CarPlay Bluetooth at the same time. That way I have CarPlay video piece working and audio piece over MMI Bluetooth . The only thing is that I need to manually set iPhone to use MMI for music and phone call audio device.
It relatively works well, I would give it 8/10.
There are couple glitches though which I am working through with the seller.
1. Wireless CarPlay uses Bluetooth and WiFi together. WiFi dropped for me twice which resulted in losing CarPlay interface on the screen. Had to manually tap CarPlay WiFi network to reconnect.
2. Phone did not connect couple times automatically. Need to do few more tests on that.
3. Screen at the edge is bit blurry, I guess it could be an issue with the low resolution of 6.5 inch screen.
4. I will need to run an aux cable underneath the centre console to the armrest for AMI audio. It wasn’t not supposed to be necessary.
I treat all above as a product is not as described and will work with the seller on sort of resolution. I’ll post the outcome shortly.

After talking to the seller, we decided to use wired connection instead of wireless.
CarPlay seems to be much more stable and I can still use MMI Bluetooth for the audio. It also charges the phone. Let’s see how that goes now.

Here are the steps I took in order to install the CarPlay
This is the video I followed. I didn’t have any panel tools so I used my kids plastic spoon and knife to pop out the aircon panel.

Connection diagram

My additional comments.
Please note that after removing the MMI unit , it will trigger the airbag fault which needs to be cleared with VCDS when you put it back together. It happens when you disconnect the passenger off airbag notification.
1. If you want to use AUX, then you need to replace the green connector block on the 48 harness
2. If you use AMI connection then no need to change the green connector block
3. MMI control- You need to connect the blue cable from the CarPlay to the yellow white cable from the 48 harness. For RMC it is connected in the different block on the 48 harness but it’s an only one yellow white cable so you cannot make a mistake.
4. Unit comes with the dedicated microphone. I don’t use it but I installed it in the panel above the head.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190112/9a805d0938717d99a524bd266c54ab76.jpg
I used my cat’s toy to push it behind the ceiling and behind the airbag on the pillar.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190112/748f1ffc23b4460e737018082737c55a.jpg
I ran the cable underneath the seal on the pillar and behind the glove box which also needs to be removed in order to place the CarPlay unit.
5. CarPlay unit I placed behind the glove box. There is some space to place it. Cables can be pushed from the MMI through the small gap. It’s pretty easy.
6. CarPlay USB is currently located in the glove box. There was a blanked whole which I used to run the cable from the CarPlay which is just behind the glove box.
My hacks.
I wasn’t happy with the performance of the wireless CarPlay so seller asked me to try the cable CarPlay. It works very well and charges the iPhone. I’m good with that. I’m a network engineer and I prefer cables anyway.
Audio hack
I keep my phone connected to the original MMI Bluetooth. That way I keep all the regular MMI behaviour of the phone calling + CarPlay enhancements and I don’t need AMI or AUX cables .
On the phone I configured it to force the Bluetooth speaker for the phone calls.

MMI media is set to my phone as a music streaming device. That way Apps send audio back to the MMI. I use Spotify and tunein. Sometimes you need to manually change the app to use Bluetooth as an audio output. Happened twice so far. Not a big deal.
I ordered AMI aux cable anyway just to see how would that work but don’t think I will use it.
Those are my findings so far. Lack of touch screen is not an issue at all. All MMI controls work very well.

Thanks for taking the time to post the wright up.
now that carplay has the option of Google Maps - you’ll be able to show “satellite “ images rather than just the road layouts.
It will be interesting to hear how well the Google Satellite map performs.

The MMI connect wire needs to be tapped to the yellow white wire. Dont disconnect the yellow white from the block. Just strip the piece of the yellow white cable, twist blue MMI cable around it and use the insulation tape to secure it.

So so ! I’ve been travelling so haven’t had time to respond! I’m using it wired , works well I.e. connects with no issue and I can hear SMS , what’sapp via car Bluetooth.
I find though it is very hit and miss , satnav directions are intermittent it works one day and not the next - most days like my wife .. all picture no sound 🤣. If I’m using sat nav and have car radio in back ground the MMI knob interferes with radio and changes station 😕
I’m still debating just pulling it and putting in sat nav as right now for 350 euro I’m not feeling it.
I bought the mmi cable to try and fix AUX issue , didn’t work either...
All in all the novelty is wearing off quickly and the interactions with the boys in China has been frustrating , they are now advising cutting more wires to bypass AUX issue which I’m not too keen on

That is correct if you MMI radio. I use TuneIN internet radio from the phone and dont have that issue. TuneIN does all the stations around the world and its a CarPlay supported app.

Yeah, that happens. I noticed that if you connect the cable before the bluetooth connects then it chooses bluetooth... works 8/10 :)
It's not perfect, I agree but it really ticks all the boxes for me.

My car is Audi A6 2014 with RMC l (thus, no AMI nor AUX ports are available).
My MMI Unit serial code is attached and I am looking for any possibility to have AUX port installed.

HW: H54
RMC"
I am looking forward for your extended support on this. I can replace the old unit with RMC Cnct Plus if this helps

If all you want is the Aux in then this plus the cable will give you what you require

I had AMI retrofitted to my 2012 C7 using this kit and it was as if it was from the factory

Thanks mate for your pormpt reply, my unit doesn't have the yellow port and it has only the pink one as per the attached image. I think I would have to replace the unit too?

I would email Kufatec customer service and ask them. I have always found them very helpful
