Next question, pads and discs will need doing in a couple of thousand miles, had a price from audi which made me whince, quite happy to do it myself , just the issue of epb release and battery charger. I have a ctek conditioner/ charger so assume this will be ok, on my c5 i used a basic diagnostic tool which saved me a fortune in the time i had the car, full vcds is not something that really interests me, is there a recommended fault code reader which will also allow the epb to be released and reset after the discs are changed. Would prefer an outright purchase rather than a subscription based item and preferably self contained.

whilst at audi i asked about the panoramic sunroof service and queried why i’d not been offered one and what was their view on the stories of roof failures. Answer maybe not surprisingly was that if serviced there would be no problem the argument being that properly lubricated there was insufficient friction/strain in the mechanism to cause a problem. On the face of it that sounds believable, of the failures reported does anyone know if its been an issue with correctly serviced/lubricated roofs?

many thanks

If you are happy to do the brakes yourself it is very easy to remove the EPB and manually wind it back. I did mine last month and had no issues. Remove the EPB solenoid by removing the two torx screws, once off use a 7mm allen key to wind the cylinder back by turning it clockwise until it stops. The rest is as per normal. Just make sure the handbrake is off before you start and the ignition is off. When you finish just lift up the EPB switch until it stops driving the solenoid back.

Thank you, seems straight forward.

Not saying this doesn’t work but as far as I know this is the emergency method of releasing the handbrake not really meant for changing pads.
Last time I did this ,not on a6, vcds goes through a cycle or calibration at the end. I think it’s to figure out the new thickness of pads/discs. By doing this it more or less knows when to stop the motors and adjust for mileage otherwise the motor’s will keep winding and could burn out. It does this by resistance. The way it was described to me was it’s similar to the electric windows, after a battery change you need to go through putting it up to the top and holding button for a few secs then do the same down so that the auto up/down knows at what resistance to stop powering the windows.
I could be talking pish though but that’s how the mechanics I know do it and I’ve never had a electric handbrake/calliper failure.

Okey dokey, perfectly plausible, maybe i’ll just do the fronts and get rears done at next service. Thanks for the info.
