Lit up like a christmas tree

Hi,
I'm hoping somone can offer some assistance on this. My 2011 2.0tdi A6 just decided to go crazy!
I got in the car this afternoon to drive home, got out onto the main road and a warning light popped up on the dash, 'sterring defective do not drive'
Now it's not the first time this has come up, normally it goes away and doesn't come back. The last time it did it was about this time last year.
But this one didn't go, and when I got home i plugged into VCDS for a quick scan, it brought back a load of errors, after some advice on the best place to start.

Hi,
The battery is as old as the car, never been replaced. But I've not noticed anything battery related like poor starting or other odd errors.
Water wise, not as far as I can tell, pointer on where to look? However it does seem to have shown itself shortly after all this rain we've just had??

Not good news and no other way of saying it......I got that message before on my last A6 (2013 model) and I got it checked by Audi. The message was intermittent and they couldn't find any fault but said I might need a new steering rack if it came back. It did come back and it got worse. I could lose power assistance when driving along...out of the blue...but then it would disappear for weeks and all would be ok.

I traded the car against an Ultra (dealer knew of the issue) but the new owner ended up getting a new rack after a couple of months. Think it was about 2k...

'Hangs head and begins to cry...' This was what i was hoping wasn't the problem. It's been on and off for a while, it just goes away, I can clear the DTC codes and all is good again, but then it, as you said, just comes back out the blue. Sometimes it come back for all of about 2 seconds, but like today it came on and didn't want to go away.

I was hoping it was a module or loose wire, but I have a feeling this times it's more.

What I find so strange is that the car is perfect before, no warning, no funny noise, nothing. It just pops up and causes the loss of power steering, tpms and something else. If it was mechanical I would have thought it wouldn't go away like it does, which points to bad sensors or wiring....

Maybe it is time to part ex....but I'd feel bad selling it knowing the next owner will inherit the problem!

Sounds exactly like mine unfortunately alright. Damn expensive if not under warranty too.

Mine might disappear for a couple of months but then come back. The dodgy bit was when I'd lose steering assistance unexpectedly in a car park or somewhere. ...

Hi. Don't know it this would relate to your car or not, my FL late 2015. Had a recall done at around 9 months for a steering rack moisture check. So that know there may be an issue with some racks Might be worth trying to find out if yours falls into this recall.

My previous had a similar issue (2014). Was driving along, never missed a beat, suddenly, message after message popped up. Basically everything like steering faulty, lane assist not working, brakes faulty etc etc. the whole package! Stopped the car. Restarted engine. All messages came back within a minute or two. Then attended a meeting for an hour, came back in the car and messages never showed up. In fact they never showed up again!

My dealer was very confused as the car didnt show anything on the log either!

Makes no difference now, sold it in 2017 and all is well afaik.

Thanks all for the replies. As it always did, it popped back up again on the way home, wouldn't go away. But it was a damp and wet night. Took the car out in the morning for a good drive in the dry and the lights went away. Was driving past my local Audi so popped in, they were as confused as the rest of us, but said basically sounds like a steering rack and other bits... Asked about the recall on the rack for misture and got nonthing?

So i've fixed the problem this morning by part exing the car for an A8... Must say i've always quite fancied one.

Not sure it's going to be a long term relationship, it's a nice car, but with the kids growing up quick we won't need something this big for long.
