Hi,

Just got in my car this morning (B6 1.9TDI) and turned the key. It turned over like normal but nothing fired. After a second or so, a brake warning light appeared and the car made 3 beeps.

I had been noticing some occasional odd behaviour for a few weeks now, its hard to explain but sometimes I would turn the key and nothing would happen. It wouldn't turn or anything, but if I turned it off, waited a moment and tried again it would start. Not sure if these issues are related.

Anyway, I just made a video of the issue I described. Hopefully its of use.

Note, the first beep relates to a bulb which is blown.

Its the crank angle sensor/engine speed sensor G28. If you try to start the engine watch the rev counter needle if it doesn't move this confirms the sensor.
Brake warning will always appear after several non-starts, it is a red herring and should be disregarded.

A fault code read would help.

Hi,
Thanks for this info, but as the video shows the rev counter needle does move a little bit as its turning over (approx 200 rpm according to the dial)...

That's why I added a fault code read would help in the next post.

Found this post regarding crank speed which I thought was a little slow.

I just finished a search back to 1999, and found nothing really, but I did come across one person (ymz) saying the same thing: under 250 and the ECU cuts fueling...well that doesn't make sense because it starts, albeit a little slow (4-6 seconds cranking).

Looks like it could do with a service as well, that is part of the beeping. The cranking speed needs to be 280 but above 200 rpm usually gets them going eventually so yes, a code read is number 1 step and then check the cranking rpm in measuring blocks.

Thanks.

So before I get a mechanic should I try and jump start it with a friends battery?

I only bought a new battery last year so will be very surprised if it was the battery...

DO NOT use jump leads! Recharge the battery or use a proper jump pack.
