the problem got worse when the car would no longer start even though it was working perfectly fine few hours before. The belief was that the fuse was blown that both the anti shudder valve and cooling fan uses and the ASV was left in the closed position causing the engine to not start. I then looked for the fuse in the engine compartment as that's where most engine management fuses are. I couldn't allocate the specific fuses to I removed all engine management fuses and replaced them. I then tried to start the car and it didn't work so I then removed the ASV. Hoping I would do an output test to see whether the valve operates I then hooked up vcds and I had bigger problems occur.

Prior to removing the ASV I removed four 10 amp fuses in the engine bay and since then when I would put the key in ignition the instrument cluster would make a ticking noise. fast forward removing the ASV I hooked up vcds to test the valve and it said engine control module unreachable. Now ive hooked it up after changing every single engine management fuse in the engine bay and left the battery disconnected and now multiple control modules are unreachable. my vcds is genuine fyi.

I believe that this may be caused by fuses dying but I cant get my head around how a common ASV can go from a small issue to a most control modules malfunctioning. I need to test multiple wires and control modules to see if they are getting power but I don't know how this is done with a multimeter. I also believe that the instrument cluster ticking maybe due to a fuse or relay positioned behind the cluster that's gone bust. If anyone can help me that would be great. I feel like its time to call the diagnostic tech, this has gone way beyond me.

okay so huge progress has been made. it turns out that due to having someone else help me swap out fuses they misplaced one of them and the ecu therefore did not communicate. The ecu is now communication, output tests on both cooling fans and ASV have been performed and they are both working. the noise from the instrument cluster has also disappeared. I have cleared the engine codes and now I'm getting no codes which is actually bad as I have no indication as to what is wrong. The car still does not start. I will be testing the fuelling system and if it still doesn't work then I don't know what to say really. I will check ground connections for any corrosion and starter motor. Any suggestions are welcome :-)

sorry for the late reply, I did as you said but didn't manage to get the battery full overnight, however I did do the scan with charger attached. I also did a voltage drop test on the starter motor and changed some of the relays with another car that had the same relays. the voltage between the starter motor and battery were the same, I did this by positive on starter, negative on battery. I then did a voltage drop test and got 00.75V and 00.52V respectively. At the time of doing this, battery was at a poor 11.70V. when I place the key in, ignition comes on, I then fully insert it and hear some form of click from the engine bay. I couldn't turn the engine, I didn't have the 12 point socket for the crank. What size is the crank socket size? The relays I changed were the large HHZ3, KL30 and horn, in the engine bay I changed R2. Some pics below of relay and starter.

light damage on front right side which caused body to scuff but no serious collision. the door errors, steering and abs errors are down to the car having the battery removed. the air flow error is due to me removing maf to test the starter motor. But as you can see in multiple modules there is engine control module error of there being no signal. this may be due to the engine not being turned on. Do you have any suggestions? I found the real figures of starter motor voltage drop, its 004.7 and 005.5v which doesn't sound too significant for the engine to fail. Can you tell me where the fuse is for ASV/cooling fan. perhaps ecu thinks due to that not working that asv is in closed position so is not starting? I called AA today, they have taken it to garage after testing battery, alternator and starter. But I doubt garage will figure it out. After testing battery, starter, alternator, fuses, relays where do you go from there? clutch position sensor could be faulty but that would throw a code.

I can't drive it, it won't start remember? I have cleared it before, then done a rescan. It doesn't show any engine faults. I have also tried both keys to see if the key is failing but nothing. I'm going to work for six days straight now so till then all I can do is search for suggestions. I will have to visit the garage with my vagcom and clear everything and do a rescan.

garage got back to me, starter motor was dead. Even though it was getting power. If I rolled it down a hill would that bypass starter and start it up? This then means if car starts up the starter is faulty?

There sure are, shame I didn't figure it out. Knew it was the obvious, it usually always gets overlooked on things like this. I'm glad I didn't throw any parts at it. Was only going to if I knew what the problem was for sure. I thought if there's power going to starter it should work, turns out even if it has all the power internal parts can fail.

Reviving this dead thread.....so after the starter motor change and then I changed the throttle body the car still went into limp mode. The fault codes are still the same but without the cooling fan fault. Today the car went into limp mode, and then the power went down even though I down shifted. The whole car was making a shuddering noise like when a car stalls and then the shudder would go when I put foot down on clutch. I turned car off, cel gone and then back on and car drove.

Another issue I'm experiencing is the car pulls back when driving. It's a weird experience but as if I'm going forward and for less than a second something pulls the car back. It happens every 10 mins. Personally I think I have two issues, clutch/dmf and the throttle issue. But expert opinion is welcome!

Google Search suggestions according to the codes it's a throttle pedal, sensor or wiring/ecu. Yet the symptoms suggest it's a clutch/dmf issue. Any help?

It is a little odd this one, it suggests the ECU but I would change the throttle pedal first as they are a common failure.

Swapped gas pedal with a another pedal with each having same part number. I thought I solved it till today, put foot down km motorway and limp mode came back after car juddered. I don't know what causes the car to pull back, but I suspect it's the cause of limp mode too. I will check codes tomorrow, I can't understand what is causing it to go to limp mode and the pull back action.

Rear right does have more brake dust then the rest of the wheels, can a caliper brake pads touch the brake disc when driving without braking? The caliper was changed, it may have not been set properly via vcds.

Can confirm P1388 code is still there even though its been cleared several times. I guess its time to check wiring from pedal to ecu, and wiring of throttle body to ecu. Does anyone have wiring diagram? And how am i meant to know if wiring is faulty if the wires look fine? I know youre meant to use a multimeter but to do that but everything has to be disconnected from the harness, and then a resistance test.
