View Full Version : MOT Failure (emissions) VW Golf Mk5 Tdi 8v (BKC Engine)
Hi all,
I have a VW Golf Mk5 Tdi 8v (BKC Engine, no DPF) my car was taken in for an MOT and failed miserably on the MOT smoke test, Averaged 2.42 which is way above the limit of 0.80. I am wondering what to do next to ensure it passes? I have also recently had the Engine/Exhaust light on, which gave a code of P0401. I have cleaned the EGR out and aim to clean the intake manifold out too but the light will still come back on after 30 miles, can anyone advise on what to do next? Cheers.

What year? Is the light on now?

Hi Mate, it's 2004 and no the light isn't on as I reset it using my OBD2 before it was MOT'd. It's saying the EGR System has 'Not Passed' on the emissions test part of my app for the OBD2. I presume that implies the EGR needs replacing?

So they are using the 0.8 manufacturers plate limit. I would tippex over the 0.8 symbol on the vin plate. Then put some fuel system cleaner in and get it hot bit of an Italian tune up ie a damn good drive. They then have to test it at the default value of 3.00.

As far as the egr, remove the hose suck on the pipe does it hold vacumn. If not replace it.

Sounds like the egr is sticking open causing more incomplete combustion .
Don't know how valid the tipex is so the default 3.00 is used , lol .

Because if there is no mpv value on the vin they have to test at default

Its not the vin number its the manufacturers plate value. I should of been more specific. If no plate value then refer to default.

Vehicles manufactured in or after 1980 must be tested for exhaust smoke using an approved diesel smoke meter. Make sure you follow the smoke meter manufacturer's instructions.
When testing automatic transmission, you might want to check the vehicle manufacturer's instructions so that you don't overheat the transmission system. Avoid unnecessary engine acceleration or prolonged high revving of the engine.
Before the test, check the maximum smoke level limit for the vehicle and enter the required details into the diesel smoke meter.
For vehicles first used before 1 July 2008, the limit will be one of the following:
the level specified on the manufacturer's plate
2.5m-1*for a non-turbocharged engine – if it's not stated on the manufacturer's plate
3.0m-1*for a turbocharged engine – if it's not stated on the manufacturer's plate

The Vin is visible on my windscreen. The sticker which is on the drivers door which shows a value of 0.8 has been removed.
It’s in today, I’ll let you know how it goes. I replaced the EGR and it feels so much better, pulls really well. Thanks for the replies, it’s appreciated

Surely the rules are referring to main vin plate / sticker with all the axle weights and manufacturers smoke coefficient value .

A window vin is just a secondary / third , quick externally viewed way of ID .

So with the window vin it’ll be fine?

Only one readable vin number is required for an mot.

I'm happy to comply with the law but it needs to be thought through and loopholes sown up.

Same here , I don't condone it , I'm all for less smoke .
To buy a car with the main vin info sticker missing looks well dodgy and awkward when they actually realise and U turn the one vin rule .
Just passed the MOT. They tested it at 0.80 even with no sticker it passed comfortably. Was 0.01
All it needed was a new EGR, a bottle of emissions reduced to clear the crap out of it and a good long drive

Removing the sticker was never going to work when they've already recorded the manufacturers smoke coefficient value of 0.80 and probably future mot's ?
0.01 , I doubt it , thats dpf territory .
