Hi folks,

I have a 1.6 tdi 2012 estate.

I have owned it since new its now at 182000 miles full vwsh. Since 10k miles it occasionally looses almost the full header tank of coolant. At first it only seemed to do it on cold nights and in the morning the light would be on and the tank empty (but not the full system).

Anyway it did it so rarely I would just top up and VW and our local indy could not find any issues. Now during this very hot weather it seems to be doing it every other day, I have seen a few drips on the floor but can't track where they are coming from.

It has had the timing belt done and water pump and that did not change anything.

I realise this is almost impossible to diagnose over the internet however are there any know issues for leaks worth looking at for this car?

Any help appreciated!

ps there are no head gasket warning signs such as pressure in the pipes, mayo on the oil cap, pressure or bubbles in the header tank etc etc.

You need to have it pressure tested.

I had a very similar problem with my old Audi but it never showed any water patches on the ground. When I removed the plastic engine/sump shield I notices that the steel lower rad outlet fitting had rusted so much so that it seeped water. The small amount of water either steamed off or dropped onto/into the plastic tray where it stayed until I drove whereupon it just flew aft. I never had it fixed because it looked a major task but just kept filling the reservoir every week.
