When people refer to the 'throttle body' what exactly is this? Does this term apply to both petrol and diesel engines?

The throttle body is a pipe with a disc (butterfly) mounted on a spindle and is operated either by a cable from the accelerator pedal or by an electric motor controlled by the ECU based upon the throttle pedal position. The TB regulates the amount of air allowed into the engine. Diesels up to more recent times didn't have a TB but they are now being used on certain versions such as the new 2.0 16v PDTDI.

this is the bit your dad would turn about 10 degrees with his hand to make the car rev slightly when working under the bonnet on older cars. (this is true as of my childhood)

i didn't know what a TB was until you explained it crasher, it was then a case of 2 + 2

Ah, now I have an idea of what it is! I presume therefore that my 2003 130TDi PD doesn't have one?

I seem to remember my old Citroen BX 1.9D had a device similar to what you explained. If I pulled the lever, the engine would rev. The lever was connected to the accelerator cable....am I talking about the same device here?

Not as such but there is a butterfly in the EGR valve.

I have disconnected my EGR valve by removing the rubber pipe from the top of it, blocking the pipe off with a screw, and blocking up the inlet in the valve. I presume this will keep the valve shut all the time and only allow fresh air into the engine?

Yes and it will cause an EMS fault code.
