That red line varies depending on the temperature of the engine so when it’s cold it’s more in the 4K range.

So you have coded the needle sweep, as was wondering how you got the second photo at first. :)

Agree with A6S its to do with engine temperature, once up to its normal operating temperature it stays fixed on mine. The lowest point depends on the ambient temperature so in the recent cold snap it has been lower than I have ever seen it maybe even 4,200rpm.

Generally though it comes up, quicker than the engine temperature gauge does.

It does vary by engine what the top one is my loan car was 5,000rpm and my own car is 5,200rpm (possibly 5,400rpm).

Begs the question, why do you want to change it though?

Works as described on my BiTdi. As noted I think the starting point varies a little based on ambient but not much... the red line climbs very quickly (it's at max before oil temp even registers at 60C).

BiTdi it climbs to 5200 I think... probably higher than the regular V6 Tdi because the BiTdi is a "stronger" engine - some engineering changes in the pistons and con-rods (and crank?) and a bunch of additional work done on the cooling system inside the engine (additional oil sprays to cool pistons etc). A couple of years ago I did find a pretty detailed design discussion by a couple of the Audi engineers involved in creating the BiTdi engine but damned if I can find it again.

My old facelift ultra did that hot cold change in the limiter.
Could it be equipment specific? Both my facelifts had the tech pack, electric memory seats/mirrors(before they were standard equipment on the slines) so would have had the higher convenience or comfort modules.

Did you retrofit the whole mmi/cluster or just the cluster? I think it’s driven from the mmi as that has the nvidia chipset

I was just thinking if we take a step back from this. If this is something that’s temperature related then it must get information from a sensor.
Have you guys checked you don’t have an issue with coolant temp sensor or engine temp?
That could be the reason it’s not working. There’s been a few post of poor consumption and car dropping temp so it might be related.

Just drove home in car. When cold red line is about 4200rpm. Once the coolant temp hit about 4bars the red line is at 4800.

Let me just throw a wild card in here.

The whole "variable red line" thing is an interesting piece of dashboard bling but REALLY (REALLY?) does it mean anything?
Based on my observation of it's starting (~4000RPM) and end points (~5200RPM) versus the actual engine water and oil temps (water not fully hot and oil temp does not register so <60C) there is NO WAY I would rev the engine to either the starting or ending point until the engine was properly warm - oil temp in the high 70's in winter or into the 80s in the warmer months.

The point I'm making is "what's the point?" For track use maybe it has some value but for a diesel car that you want to have a long life it is pointless... dashboard bling.

If folks want to make it work for the sake of it working then I can understand that but personally I'd not invest a lot of time in it.. there are probably other fish to fry that would yield a more nutritious meal.

Water temp or oil temp get up to 90?
Oil temp can be pushed to 105C with spirited driving - and I'm sure that track use would push it further. But I'd not "push" an engine until the oil is (at the very least) "hot" - so on a BiTdi in winter that is high 70s... you simply won't get it any higher without loading the engine a bit. Summer it will get to mid 80s in normal driving.

Might be worth having a look at the central convenience module(46). These are somewhat connected to the cluster. Could be a code that needs turned on or you might need the highline version.
Will drop a scan of 46 so you can compare when I’m home.

I think the enjoyment of getting something working and it’s great how places like these forums get people together to problem solve something like this. Otherwise it will be quite boring here😄

I have done the same retrofit on the colour DIS and had the RMC unit but have now retrofitted the 3G Plus MMI you will only get maps (Street View) in the DIS if you have a MMI 3G Plus, the RMC did not support it. you also have to add a fibre optic cable from the MMI to the colour DIS to get street view to function.
My red Line stays always on 5K

As far as I know this requires the mmi plus/4g. The dis will only show compass, directions and street name but not full map.
For U.K. spec cars you can only get the colour dis as part of the tech pack which included the mmi plus.

The maps on dis wasn’t available on the prefacelift. This was a facelift addition and requires the new mmi with the nvidia tegra chips to work. Also the reason why things like vim coding don’t work as the architecture is completely different.

My pre facelift with black and white dis showed street names and other info from the sat nav so it’s probably coming from the foc

If this is something that’s temperature related then it must get information from a sensor.

As the bottom left temperature signal works, it should work.

But probably there is an interesting fact, I've seen somewhere below your post: Maybe the problem lies elsewhere. Probably we were all wrong.

As you could remember, there were several topics about the "lap timer" issue, and we found at last, that there were an era, where there were an instrument cluster series wchich were not supported the lap timer function. We never figured out why this feature was missed from these units. Probably the reason is, that these units are not supporting the oil temperature feauter, and therefore the LAP timer function was not installed into these units at all.

Or maybe, the oil temperature sensor was not stored in an area, from where the instrument cluster could read it, and therefore the Lap Timer feature is disabled in the instrument cluster while it supports it in general.

I have the "basic" comfort module, and not the "highline" version.

Maybe this can help to find a solution for both of these issues, probably these are belonging to the all the same reason.

This is what I have after my MMI 3G Plus upgrade and this would only work with the FOC connected, what I had with my RMC was basic arrow and road names this is far more detailed and also shows you position on the road as you drive towards a junction etc.....

let me clarify the first photo is MMI 3G plus and NOT RMC
the second photo is MIB2

MMI 3G Plus and MIB2 both have radios its in the boot.

without the FOC connected it is impossible to have the street view as above as it took me 2 months to figure out why it was not showing and only showing basic arrow views.
the RMC does not come with a FOC connected as it does not display the same detailed as above.

I don't know but I can confirm that until I added the FOC to my 3G Plus I had only basic arrows the same as RMC when I fitted the FOC I had high detailed road navigation.

I have no idea why the diagram shows this, sorry.

Only problem is I will need to rewire most of the car for the radio in the boot and add FOC TO THE BOOT (caps sorry) I am not sure the juice is worth the squeeze

Could this be caused by flashing the cluster to change the mileage? Maybe some initialisation process needs to be ran similar to component protection when these are fitted.

As for the foc. The rmc unit could be feeding information for other devices like night vision, head up display etc.

Front door was for my folding door retrofit (new module arrived today)

The redline is 100% going to be done I have tomorrow off work so will be testing the conv module tomorrow I have been looking at wiring diagrams and the clocks are the same highline or low except the FOC

THE map in dis seems to be mmi3g minimum and am not going to do that retro fit again

I can only think it’s maybe the adaptation in the clocks fancy doing an adaptation map and I’ll copy that over

Yes I have folding mirrors from the Factory not retrofit, although I coded the passenger door mirror to dip on reverse for kerb and it works but every couple of days it forgets it return position on the glass and usually points higher than originally. really bugging me why its doing this..........

I changed the passenger to a 2015 module as i was told it would fix the memory issue of the mirror hence rev J but it didn't change anything, anyway hope this helps....

I have a j on passenger and it doesn’t work says motor short to ground and when I use multimeter only out puts .5v for a fraction of a second when not connected

It might be worth checking the a7 forum for coding for the colour dis and rmc unit as if I remember right the a7 all came with colour dis in the facelift whether you had rmc or mmi plus.

My best guess if you can have map in dis with RMC coding is in rmc

But it seems a rare combo rmc and highline clocks

it works but every couple of days it forgets it return position on the glass and usually points higher than originally. really bugging me why its doing this..........

I think, this problem belongs to the comfort module. IMHO it should be the "highline" version against to the standard.

I can safely say that my 15FL Ultra Avant, with Tech Pack and Electric Seats/Mirrors all factory fitted, does not have an animated red line.
It is constantly on 4.8k (1 red blob left of 5), both from cold in the cold, and after hours of driving.

Should it dynamically adjust as standard, and something need fixing?

It's the full feature one, 2 SD Card slots, SIM slot, HDD Map Info, Full colour console with maps (although I've changed it to default to the arrows)

You have mmi 3G plus connect so it rules it coming from the mmi for the dynamic Red line

Mate am going to be honest we don’t quite know what makes the redline dynamic some cars have it some don’t I cannot find where it is coded

I have the same clocks part number and SW as A6S and his is dynamic and mine aren’t

Must come from somewhere but where is what am trying to figure

I’ll try convince module today and report back

I can almost swear that my old facelift ultra had the moving red line. Need to see if I can find a scan for it saved somewhere.
