Just bought an A4 se technik TDIe 2014. I need a tow bar but was advised by the garage that I may need a cooling system upgrade! Why would that be and how do I find out if I do?

would that garage have been the main dealership? I've heard this recommendation before when a pal got a tow bar fitted to a Q7, but never seen it implemented. Suppose if you are dragging the maximum towable weight up steep hills all day or towing a caravan across Africa it might be necessary, doubt you'd need it in most cases though. I believe it is a larger gearbox oil cooler (if auto), bigger fans on the rad. Speak to independent tow bar installers who do it all day, they should know if customers are having overheating problems. I think if you intend towing things that heavy or far you wouldn't have an A4!

It was a towbar company that said I may need it. I’ll give audi a call tomorrow if I get the time. Wish my allroad hadn’t got written off, wouldn’t have had any problems with putting a towbar on that I think.

Is your A4 an Avant? if so it may be like my A6 Avant as come with towbar prep, so has the extra cooling and the wiring in place, it just needs the towbar fitting and the control module. That's what I did with mine and its been no problem, I tow a caravan about 2000 miles a year with no overheating issues

Not an Avant, saloon style.

Towbar fitted. The guy who fitted it said the cooling system upgrade is for warmer countries. It’s never going to be a problem in Scotland.
