Although posted elsewhere, thought i'd ask for the official viewpoint.

MK5 Golf.

Would your HIDS be compatible with these?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270180418694&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=017

Thanks in advance on behalf of myself and anyone else this helps.

I would expect the HID kits "should" be ok with these... on the basis that you go for the single HID for dipped bulbs..

The question is... if the "rings" just run off the standard side light power, yes..

You will have to check which bulbs the projector headlight takes... At a guess i would say H7's..

I'm looking at these on ebay - item number 270180418694

http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb105/golfmk5gttdi/angeleyes1.jpghttp://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb105/golfmk5gttdi/angeleyes2.jpg

I asked the seller this question....... "i'm considering pairing a chrome/silver set of these to some HIDS from http://stores.ebay.co.uk/hids-direct . would you please tell me the details of the bulbs that are used for Dip beam and Main beam. The rings are powered by the side light feed. is this correct?"

the reply i got was this... "Hi Ben, the dip and main beams are H7 bulbs and they will Go with the HIDs, the halo rings are powered on the side light feed ,the chrome mk5 lights should be here by end of the week, best regards Paul"

Would i need 2 sets of HIDS if i wanted to run HIDS on dip and main beam?

i asked him a question via his ebay shop and asked the reply to be posted here.

Had a very fast reply via the ebay system. It appears that i would need 2 HID kits.

Just the dip beam then me thinks.

i was right.. the H7's...

If you are wanting to go down the route of HID's for the dipped and full beam.. all you will require is a "BI" HID kit...

in simple terms.. one ballast per each side with a feed for 2 bulbs either side...

only down point.... double the price... the thing is to consider is, is it worth it for the full beam to be HID or is it just for look..

One not so legal tip is to replace the FULL beam bulbs with 100W Rally Bulbs.. so when you are using them in dark areas you get the max light possible with out affecting any one else.. but the UK legal limit is 55W.. so thats your call....

There we go, step one. get the lights, just waiting on the HIDS now.

http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb105/golfmk5gttdi/19112007010.jpg

The plan is such...........

To write a how to guide to remove the current and refit the new lights.

This may involve the removal of the front bumper:dunno:

With the information i hope to include, it should also complete this how to (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=16866) at the same time, as the author has omitted to explain his processes of lights and bumper removal.

As you know, writing how to guides is so one can look back at the satisfaction of the job and also as a benefit to others that require to know the method should they need to work on their cars.

A how to cannot be written overnight, photos may need editing, uploading, bits added here and there and the odd bit of tweaking.

I wonder how this 24hrs edit rule is going to affect me as it is likely i'll want to edit here and there, unless of course there are certain temporary permissions that can be granted my way;) untill the how to is complete?

huuummmm, a test in many ways.

HIDS arrived this morning.

The quality of the box is something to behold, let alone the contents.

the ballasts are massive! i put a CD case in the shot as a scale item. Not the best photo ever.

Encountered my 1st problem:zx11:

I thought i'd have a crack at fitting the bits and bobs to my car, so went to have a look see.

I don't anticipate any problems removing the bumper. Also i don't anticipate any problems with the compatability of the angel eye lighst going on to the car.

I don't forsee any problems fitting the HID kit to the OEM VW lights.

The problem is here.... The HID kit doesn't fit to the connections on the Angel eye lights. see the pics.

http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb105/golfmk5gttdi/25112007016.jpg

the HID kit will fit this just nicely
http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb105/golfmk5gttdi/25112007017.jpg

the OEM bulb holder
http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb105/golfmk5gttdi/25112007018.jpg

the back of the angel eyes
http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb105/golfmk5gttdi/25112007019.jpg

the HID connector
http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb105/golfmk5gttdi/25112007020.jpg

I believe that the bulb pictured in this item will fit the connector on the angel eyes.

I've contacted both suppliers and await advice.

Hi mate..

i will reply in more detail in a bit...

But from the looks of it the ANGEL EYES take the H7 bulb?? and your OEM is not H7 ??

Is that right??

Rick

Ben
25-11-2007, 03:11 PM
Hi there Rick.

I can confirm that the bulb in the angel eye head lamp is definately H7 12v 55w

the OEM in the car are <gone to check> <returns> identical in every way
http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb105/golfmk5gttdi/25112007021.jpghttp://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb105/golfmk5gttdi/25112007022.jpg

RickT
25-11-2007, 06:39 PM
I see.. so the HID bulb is just for the Golf bulb holder.

The HID's i have got fitted is just a standard H7 fitment..

You require the Standard H7 HID fitment bulbs..

you have 2 options... require you kit for a refund and purchase the H7 kit... (which will be cheaper than the VW kit) or purchase some more H7 HID bulbs and sell your exisiting bulbs...

See pic's below of a standard H7 HID fitment bulb which you require.

(i think i got carried away with them!!)

I would at this stage just like to say that when i noticed this problem earlier, that i notified both ebay sellers and to their utmost credit, both have contacted me today. It is my belief that all i require is to change the HID kit as rick says above.

Once this has all been sorted and fitted to the car i will credit both suppliers by name so if anyone else wishes to do a conversion of any type, they know where to go.
