View Full Version : Coil light on, cruise control not working and handbrake playing up

I've just bought a 2008 A4 2.0 tdi B8 Avant manual.

All was well for the first couple of hundred miles but now the coil (glow plug) light will come on and when it does, on braking, the brakes judder. The cruise control is not working and the handbrake sometimes won't disengage. If I turn off the car, when I restart, some times the coil light is out and there is no juddering from the brakes although the cruise control is still not working.

A couple of times the engine management light has also come on - on fault code scanning it says P2111 which I believe is something to do with the throttle position sensor. If I clear the fault code, the light goes out and can stay out for several hundred miles, but if I wind the car up on acceleration, sometimes the light comes back on.
Could all of this be related? I'm thinking either throttle position sensor or brake sensor or clutch sensor.

Should the handbrake automatically disengage if it's on and you drive off without manually disengaging as mine doesn't which is a bit annoying on a hill start.

Any advice most welcome. Other than these minor irritations I really like the car and hopefully it won't be too expensive to correct...

Many Thanks

Can't help with fault diagnosis, but hopefully someone will be able to help.

Regards electromechanical handbrake. Yes, with handbrake on - on a hill, then you should be able to pull away automatically.

You need a fault code scan done. It sounds like you've got a fault, causing the car to go into Limp home mode. FYI the cruise control is disabled in limp mode, so its likely you'll get that working again normally once you sort the pre-existing fault.

I feel your pain with the cost though. These are nice cars, but when they go wrong its the cost of the parts that are usually the biggest kick in the nuts. Paid £50 the other day for a drivers side door mirror glass!!!

if you have vagcom- you should be able to do a rest/recalibration !!

you have two separate faults

1) Brakes . Sticking motor for brakes or motors. Just paid £570 for 2 new rear brakes for my A6 . After driving the car, feel the area round the wheel nuts on the rear wheels, one side may be hotter than the other, this will tell you what side is sticking on. I got lucky and after cleaning sliders, winding the rear caliper in/out a few times, I got another 4 years & 40,000 miles out of tem, but the handbrake was sticky for 9 years. Its silky smooth now

2) Accelator. The cruise control wont work until this is sorted out
