View Full Version : Question C6 Avant Air Con blow out?

Hi all. I'm new to the forum, so apologies in advance if I get a few things wrong here.

I have a 2008 C6 Avant with 107k on the clock. Bought it at 3 years old with 80k on it and have looked after it religiously.

As it's getting older it's (predictably) started developing some bigger faults - Xenon's went a couple of months back. New ballasts and bulbs not so cheap!

Anyway, to the point:

Jumped in the car today to leave the supermarket and (1) as I'm backing out the space the front left parking sensors briefly beep when there's apparently nothing there; then (2) there's a whistling sound for maybe a couple of minutes as I drive across the car park; then (3) the air con stops blowing cold air. The end result - air con apparently functioning as it should, except it doesn't blow cold air at all, when prior to the crazy two minutes at Sainsbury's, it had been working absolutely fine.

I've checked out some threads on here and I'm guessing it's either the compressor (joy) or given the weird symptoms, something literally blew out the front grill (freon?), causing the sensors to go off and that the whistling came from the exit point (like a hose coming off perhaps?). I'm also guessing with it now running fine bar the tropical wind in the cabin, that the lack of whistling is perhaps due to a shut off system kicking in?

I'm getting a local 'Mr Aircon' out to look at it asap (typical that it happens on a Sunday before a BH). Thought about re-gas at KF/Halfords, but frankly this doesn't look that simple. In the meantime, I'm going to be driving it to work this week 90s style (thankfully, it's calling off outside) and wondered if anyone has seen anything like this before and can maybe shed some light?

All thoughts very gratefully received.

If you check round the condenser you might see traces of oil where the refrigerant and oil have leaked out, bust condenser would be my first thing to check.

Thanks for replying Rob69. I'm likely getting the compressor/condensor mixed up in my OP. There are indeed traces of oil around the AC kit in the engine bay, so I'm guessing you're going to be right. I must also confess to never having had the AC serviced as it's always running (climate control) and has never been anything other than frosty. Also thought it was something the Audi indy guys I use would be checking over on the bi-annual servicing.

Hopefully the AC spec can sort it out later this week. Looks like it's all accessible from the bottom of the car. Don't fancy having the bumper off for the second time in a couple of months!

Thanks again. Much appreciated.
