My car has developed the annoying steering lock module fault that seems to be common on A6's, put the key in the ignition MMI will come on and mileage but the ignition will not switch on. It initially did this around 4 months ago and i read online that the only fix is to replace the full column as the lock it is part of the column. I decided to have a look and it is not part of the column at all, it's bolted to it but not permanently fixed, remove 3 bolts and drill out a rivet and it's out.

I sent the lock away to BBA reman who fixed the issue (a faulty actuator) and i didn't have a problem for 4 months, unfortunately in the last few weeks it has started to play up again, i get a fault code on the 05 module which needs to be cleared by Vag com and the car will start, it will be fine for a few days before doing the same again, carrying a laptop around with me to keep the car on the road is a little annoying!

So i think i need to replace the module, i have seen lots of 2nd hand columns and lock modules for sale online but i have read that once they are coded, they cannot be recoded, is this correct or is also a false hood given by Audi as they want to sell you a column for £700+!

Has anyone fitted a 2nd hand column to an A6 without issue? Does the lock module need recoding or will it simply bolt in? Any advice is greatly appreciated, i am close to scraping what is an excellent car other than this stupid fault!

Are you sure it's not the ignition relay playing up.

Do do a search for J629 relay.
