Thinking of buying one of the above and just wondering everyone's opinion on the 1.6 engine. Currently got a 2.0tdi 140. Are they a good reliable engine? Thanks in advance

Title says 1.9 but post says 1.6? The 1.9 is not bad and seemingly more reliable than it's 2.0 sister engines, but try to steer clear of ill maintained BXE engines as they have a tendency to pop a con rod through the block when the big end shells seize. BKC is the more robust version and BLS ok but still not entirely unaffected by the BXE problem. There are still thousands of well maintained BKC, BLS and BXE engines out there and some have had preventative maintenance performed on them to renew / upgrade the shell bearings. Most well maintained 1.9 units run well.

Also the handbrake switch and ac compressor also the ac pressure switch then the dmf. Then the turbo which in fairness may get away with a good clean out.

Dont forget the injectors. Plus the lift pump...but hopefully they have already been replaced by now.

Seems I may be getting confused with the B5 which is a very good car. Always thought the 2 litre version of the B6s were the ones to avoid (like the one I have) but apparently I am mistaken.

the early 2.0 is awful, as you know, but the last of the 1.9's is also awful, lousy power, almost pull the skin off a rice pudding, but like to spit con rods out the block for fun.. yes, some last for ages and dont fail, cos theres always the person thats got one and done a million care free miles, but too risky for me..
