Hi,
the sat nav has stopped working.:zx11:
Car is a 56 plate.
When you turn on the ignition MMI screen says check the disc.y
You can hear the dvd player in the boot whirring / spinning when the ignition is first turned on - but if you press eject it won't eject:aargh4:.
Is there anything that can be done to get it to eject, and after that - how to narrow down whether it is the disc or the headunit which has a fault?
many thanks for any pointers.

Not sure has your eject button enabled with vcds or not(from factory it is not usualy), you can try! After you get dvd out you can test it with other disc, if no success, its probably drive or laser dead! You may have fault already under nav module(mechanical fault, button stuck etc...). Had similar problem with cd charger ones, guy game, after I cleared errors, we were able to eject the disc-s, turns out, one disc was broken!
Adaption channel 65:
With this adaption channel a read test can be performed.
0 = Stop test
1 = Start read test (100% of DVDs are tested, approx. 20 minutes)
2 = Start short test (some random positions on the DVD are tested, approx. 30 seconds) (in North America: from software version 930; otherwise from software versions higher than 850)
The values are not stored, but only initiate performance of the tests
Result:
- Read test status (Rest / Test in progress / No navigation DVD inserted / Test not possible)
- Remaining time or progress, data rate
- Status result read test (performed/stopped)
- Number of read data blocks
- Minimum/maximum/average data rate
K Note:
During the read test the navigation function must not be active.
Adaption channel 66:
In this adaption channel a self-test call can be performed.
1 = Start self-test (This value is not stored, but merely initiates the test)
Result:
Test status (passed/in progress/not possible)
DVD drive (OK / n.OK)
GPS receiver (OK/n.OK)
Gyro (OK / n.OK)
Eject button (OK/n.OK)
Internal interface status (OK/n.OK)
K Note: This device self-test provides functions which cannot be executed during operation, as they would interfere with operation.
Adaption channel 67:
In this adaption channel the inserted CD/DVD can be ejected.
1 = Eject CD/DVD (This value is not stored, but merely initiates the eject)
Adaption channel 68:
(in North America: from software version 930; otherwise from software version 850)
With this adaption channel ejection of an inserted CD or DVD can be disabled/enabled. The function of the eject button is deactivated/activated.
0 = Normal status / Eject button not disabled
1 = Eject button disabled (anti-theft protection)

Thanks very much for the detail info.
I don't have a diagnostic tool - do you think it should it cost much to get a main dealer ( ? ) or an independent to test if the eject and been enabled, and if not the to enable it?
The sat nav headunit keeps trying to spin up the dics - you can hear it everytime someone opens one of the car doors.
There is the high pitch whirr of a cd spinning up to speed - then slowing down, but also a rattle ( almost like a crackle of electric - but convinced myself that is just being alarmist and it is a physical rattle of something inside the head unit ( I hope :1zhelp:) .....so I'd like to disconnect the power - or do whatever needs to be done to stop the headunit constantly trying the disc - any pointers much appreciated.
What tool do you need to get the Sat Nav head unit out of the metal frame
Many thanks;)

Dealer will charge you probably a hour rate of diagnose work. So you maybe try use vcds user map thread to find someone local, who will check it out with few minutes and for 6pack:).
VCDS - Users Locations (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php/257-VCDS-Users-Locations)
Usually metal keys is needed to take nav unit out, something like this:

If you lucky, you may try cut those out from debit/credit cards also(in this case you must push unit out from behind a bit as you cant pull with those keys, they just open secure taps)!
If you want to disable nav unit from system, so everything else is running you need to get optical loop!

I had a disk fault on mine when bought which manifested itself in the same way. It had been locked by the previous owner to prevent theft.
Inquired at my local/friendly dealer and they said it would cost £20 to have it ejected with VCDS
I bought VCDS and it took 2 mins to remove the disc drive lock :)
