Hi guys newbie
I have a mk4 golf 2003 1.4 and the speedo goes up when accelerate but then drops to zero and then will go up again and then drops any ideas would be appreciated put code reader on but no faults are showing many thanks

I think there is a speed sensor on the gearbox on the MK4. Locate the sensor and check the wiring/connector for damage.
The sensor will have a 3 wire connector. Don't confuse it with the reverse lamp switch which will have only 2 wires.
If you don't see anything obviously wrong with the wiring, remove the sensor from the gearbox and check that the plastic drive gear isn't damaged.

Thanks for the reply I have found the sensor at the back and has one bolt holding it in is it just a matter of pulling it out and just inserting it back in or is there any procedure to follow and can it be accessed with gearbox still in car many thanks

Never had to remove a VW one before but generally they just pull out and push back in. Just be mindful that the plastic drive gear needs to mesh with the gear inside the gearbox so you might need to rotate the sensor a little to help the gears mesh when refitting it.
