Hi im new to this forum, bought a new head unit for my vw passat b6 2006 a Rns 315. it was a simple install take out the old MFD and plug in the new. Since its been in iv had the AA out twice to get me started because of the battery going flat, they did a drain test and its the head unit, iv looked up on the net at is saying something about a new CAN BUS gateway, not sure what this is, does anyone know of anyone who can sort this for me? Im from Lancashire North West?

Your CANbus module will be downlevel, like mine a "C" version for an '06MY car.
You need at least an "F" version (suffix letter on the end of the part number)
to avoid battery drain.
For the module search for 3c0 907 530

The CANbus module on RHD cars is behind your climate control panel. If you have
Climatronic then it's easy to remove -- disconnect battery then remove panel and
loosen the two screws holding a bar in place that holds the module upside down.
Release the cable lock, remove plug and remove module. Replace with upgraded
version -- code with VCDS not by just copying your old module's coding into the new
but by switching on and off the check boxes that were switched on or off in your
old module.

If you have Climatic three-knob climate control panel take care that the Bowden cable is
replaced in exactly the same way as it was taken out. There's enough to leave that cable
connected though

You don't say what RNS315 you got. Is this an RNS315/DAB?

There's people about with VCDS who'll do your VCDS coding for beer tokens. I don't know
Lancs. Here's a map:

If you're not happy doing this yourself (I had to learn from info given in the forums. It's not rocket science) get to a
VAG indie shop. Check they have either VAS or VCDS by asking what diagnostic equipment they have. If they don't
answer with either of those then find another. Should be only one hour's labour.

Thank you RichardSEL for the in depth info.

I have the Rns315 Dab.

Is it ok to have a used unit or better to go for a new? And does the vag com need to be connected to my old unit to see what is selected before removing?

The VAGcom (today known as VCDS) or dealer diagnostic equipment VAS is connected to your car's socket known as an OBDii (On Board Diagnostic 2) data port. The socket's above your right knee drivers' side

With VCDS the plug (known as a dongle) connects via USB cable to a laptop running the VCDS program
There are other diagnostics out there but they won't do what you want with module changing and then coding

Today's cars major components' mostly are connected via a system known as CANbus (Controller Area Network line) that carries data signals between the car major components' controllers. The bus is often arranged in a loop. So your brakes' controller "speaks" to your ABS controller; your radio "speaks" with your ignition controller to tell when to switch on or not. Your radio is staying "alive" and taking current when IGN is off because the RNS315/DAB was designed to use a later revision CANbus controller.

My CANbus controller as seen in VCDS:
Address 19: CAN Gateway Labels: 3C0-907-530.lbl
Part No SW: 3C0 907 530 C HW: 3C0 907 951 A
Component: Gateway 007 0040
Revision: 00007000 Serial number: 0700C0621500F6
Coding: 3FFD0C04C22003
Shop #: WSC 05311 000 00000
VCID: 216728758159

No fault code found.

I can get away with using a "C" version because I run a JVC (DAB) head unit that uses an external decoder to interface its controls to my steering wheel buttons. And my CANbus that keeps the headunit alive so it remembers its last known state when you come to switch on again -- otherwise all your presets would be lost, last position on a CD, last known volume settings, etc.
