View Full Version : Mute on MMI cancelled at every start up

I am looking for some advice on how to resolve a problem, please, or - alternatively - confirmation that there is an issue with the A6 MMI across the board. I have the Facelift MMI Touch system.
Whenever I start the car, the stereo plays even when I have muted it on the previous drive. The Mute command is not persistent between ignition cycles.
So, I am in the car, the music is playing, I press the volume control and mute the sound. I stop the engine and turn off the ignition. When I turn the ignition on next time (whether that is five minutes or five days later) the music plays.
Is that how it is for everyone?
This behaviour has come up in various threads here over the years but I am convinced it wasn't doing this until the last MMI update. It used to happen occasionally but now it is every ignition cycle.
Any confirmation, denials, fixes or work-arounds would be welcomed.
Thanks

Same for me. Sometimes it will even play the same song from my phone even though I finished turning off the car 2 song after that song on my playlist. There is a startup volume that is preset that i believe you can change with vcds

Was like that on both my pre-facelift and facelift cars. Been discussed on a number of occasions here and other forum and the only workaround is to change the value using vcds

you can turn off the MMI by long press on the volume button. That survives a restart, but no MMI functions are working.

Thanks for the replies, people. I have myself raised it before on other threads but it has always just lurked as an unresolved issue. I was hoping for some suggestions for a fix or workaround as it is now driving me crazy.
Turning off the MMI isn't the answer for me as I need the system for one thing or another.
Johnsimcox, can you please explain your advice "the only workaround is to change the value using vcds" in more detail, please? I am not sure what you mean. Is a proper fix possible via VCDS?
And another thing that annoys me is that the rotary controller works in the reverse way to what is logical when I want to scroll a list or zoom the map! That would be my second fix.

I don't have the definitive answewr for you I am afraid I just recall others posting that the start up volume setting is adjustable using VCDS, but they may of course have been speculating. Hopefully someone reading ht ispost with greater knowledge of VCDS will be able to give you the information you require.

Do you have memory seats? Mine always starts with the volume that was stored when the seat memory was last set. I haven't tried it when muted though, but I don't see why it wouldn't work the same way.

OMG that would be crazy programming - but anything is possible. I can't wait to get home tonight to try this! Thanks for the suggestion.

In the olden days you just ejected your 8 track cassette (or it might even have ejected automatically when the ignition was turned off) and the next time you put it in it would start just where you finished!

just tried the above , and yes if you mute the sound before you turn the ingnition off , when you turn the ignition on the sound is muted !!
so problem solved if you have memory seats!

I tried it and it didn't, but I was working off the door switchpack. Do you have the "Save settings to key" function enabled in the MMI? IIRC that does remember more settings than simply the seats.

Hi wildbore
yes I have "save settings to key" enabled in the MMI , also had the headlights in the Auto position (don't think that make a differance though)
I hadn't touched/made any changes to the door pack switches.
hope it works for you! (By the way i only have memory seats for the driver , mines a pre FL , and has Tech Pack)
cheers!

Thanks for confirming. OK, now I am excited - this has been driving me bonkers for two years, now. Will check tomorrow morning...
Now I just need to reverse the rotary control's behaviour!
A big thanks to TimA6QSLine for solving this mystery!!!

agreed big thanks indeed to TimA6QSline for this !
re the door switches mine were set to "memory unlocked" - happy to check settings on mine again tomorrow for you , if you have an issues , let me know if it works OK!
I would also prefer the MMI rotary controller to be "reversed " - not sure of a solution on this hopefully someone will chime in , if you hop over to the Q7 forum (choose model 2016/2017 latest shape) there's guy called andyhud007 who may well have an answer........
just posted the Question on the Q7 forum my post about this is on page 32 of the "coding" section near top of page

Glad it helped. Wasn't able to test if it remembered being muted as away this w/e in my toy car so a6 is resting at home.

Thanks, I will pop over to the Q7 forum.
I was in a loan A4 the other day and the rotary controller is reversed in that car - i.e. it behaves intuitively for a RHD car. I also spent some time in a Q7 a year or so ago and I don't remember that being the wrong way round as per the A6, so it's something Audi has fixed in the last year or so.
BTW: I set up the key fob coding, muted the car audio and then exited and locked but the car still turned on the stereo this morning when I jumped in, so more investigation required there; will have to dig out the spare key and do some testing. Can I ask what you mean by saying the door switched were set to "memory unlocked"?
thanks

Re memory "memory door switches " – make sure no LED's are lit on the memory seat switches in the drivers door.

Update -
although I muted the sound , turned off the ignition yesterday evening , this morning I unlocked the car turned on ignition the sound was audible.
I repeated the process (muted sound , locked doors )and waited a good while (did this twice) during the course of today and one 1 occasion the sound staid muted and on the 2nd occasion the sound be audible. (I didn't make a note of the times between turning the ignition on and off )
so it appears the car only mutes the sound for a certain period of time when the is ignition off , quite bizzare!!

Ah! This is what is happening to me. If, when the MMI boots up, you see the Audi MMI startup screen, then it forgets the sound was muted previously. If you re-enter the car quite soon so that the MMI hasn't fully shut down from last use, it remembers the previous setting (and the MMI logo isn't displayed). It looks like the MMI remains active for about 10-15 minutes.

Wonder if there is something in the Green Menu re volume on "start up" ? I will have look this morning - worth a try

I've had a look in the green menu , under "audimanagement" - nothing obvious,
if if it can be altered via VCDS , hopefully someone will point us in the right directon.

I have the same issue with my 2014 UK A6 Allroad. I mentioned this to my wife who thought I was crazy but I tested it with her. It does remember mute but only in certain circumstances and it's not for long.
If someone could find a work around vie VCDS it would be thankful as i rarely listen to the radio and it coming on every time i get in the car starts to annoy me.
1st world problems and all that.

the only workaround I have found is to set it to Media with a source of external player. As there isnt one connected I get blissful silence when I startup.

Last night I deliberately turned down the volume on the radio to "0" (not muting it by pressing the button on either the console or steering wheel) . This morning when I got in the car the volume was as I left it. My car is Facelift with the standard RMC system. I'll do some more testing but from my experience it would seem that my car is remembering the last volume setting used

Yes, this works for me, too, so the car definitely remembers the volume setting. It just forgets the "mute" status.
