Struggling to start plus other issues (log enclosed)

I bought a c6 avant a few weeks ago and it feels like it's struggling to start first thing in the morning and sometimes idles erratically for a few seconds afterward.

I've scanned it today and its thrown up a fair few errors, I wonder if you might take a look through the scan and help me to help myself.

Clear all the codes stored and run car for a week & then rescan

I would take the car to a garage or Halfords that do a free battery check for a dud cell(s)

The starter has to turn over the car at I think 280 rpm for the fuel to run into the engine, so that might be linked to the battery

My A6 if parked on a slope, forward or backwards, allows air to enter the fuel system & I just live with it ..................... probally a leaky injector ....................... but clears up in around 5 seconds

Then I would service the car with fuel filter and look at changing the glow plugs, my car has to allow the glow plug light to go out before it will allow the engine to turn over, I am now used to it but it sometimes does my head in

I ran the scan when I first got the car and all codes listed have returned in subsequent scans.
Battery has been suggested elsewhere and as I'm in the trade its a cheap option so I've ordered one that should be with me tomorrow. ( wont hurt to have a spare kicking about if its not that)


It doesnt turn slowly it just takes longer than I'd like to start and then there is a faint rattle for a second or two after starting but it does feel like its getting weaker when It eventually fires.

Its usually fine for the rest of the day after that.

Fuel filter will be my next port of call although its claimed in the service book its been done not so long before I got the car but I can't confirm that.
I will be getting a service soon I'm just trying to get to the bottom of all the codes before getting into maintenance

Well the battery didnt make a ***** o difference, It hasnt been coded but I'm guessing the last one hadnt either as there was no code on it.

I'll try the fuel filter next.

When car is cold in morning, what is the speed of the starter ? It should be 280 rpm or the fuel wont flow to cylinders by the ECU


If the starter is slow, get the car running and see if the jump start terminal is hot after 10 minutes, this indicates resistance and my car almost went on fire because of it; the car was slow to start as well

Hopefully your starter ok & then its possibly the glow plugs

should do. I don't have it as I am poor

If you look at an OBD2 scanner like my Autel VAG505, and go on Live Data and you might be able to see how fast its spinning before it fires into life


My car if parked on a slope, forward or reverse facing, struggles to start as I have I suspect a leaky injector or something like that in my diesel engine. I can live with it, as I know what it is.................. others would have to rip it apart to find out the problem

This suggests that the car is not seeing the car in neutral or park which will prevent the car from starting.

You need to check the wiring and if ok then replace the switch.

If your problem is slow cranking then you may not fix it by rectifing the above faults.

makes sense, its going in for a gear box service soon so will get this checked at the same time, not got a lot of free time this weekend but it will get under at some point and check the plug end.

Reading up on this I have come across many who say that there would possibly be lights out on the selector if there was an issue although the park switch needs a good firm press to activate it, you can't just flick it, not sure if thats in the design though.

Will try and get a log this weekend while I remove the seatbelt warning nag see if it is slow cranking.

Obvious questions, if just bought was it privately or at auction? I think it would be either or you'd be taking it back, but since your in the trade you'd know this.

Try rattling the gear lever around a bit, if it's not seeing it's in park/neutral there could well be a fault in the selector mechanism or the ingress of contaminants.

Finally what year is it, am going to guess earlier than an 07?

So we had a few developments with this. Havent managed to get the fuel filter sorted yet.

Let me explain. Drove from Cumbria to Manchester at the weekend noticed a bulb out so stopped at halfords to get one.
On leaving the car park I applied some power the car died and glow plug light came on car wouldnt restart for a few min.

Eventually managed to get it home fine.

School run next day car ran fine on the way there but on the return journey was doing the same thing like it was struggling for fuel. 1/4 of a tank in.
got it home ran scans and amongst a million other codes these came up.

there was quiet a lot of fault codes and I'd begun by this point to suspect all the expensive stuff like ECU HPFP etc

I had noticed that there was air in the fuel system so traced all the lines to see if there was a leak, again fuel filter and HPFP was suspected and now the car would not run at all (fuel line full of air no fuel coming through still 1/4 of a tank)

This part concerns me as I couldn't cycle the fuel pump from VCDS to eliminate issue

Any how after reading various forums it occurred to me I may have an issue with the in tank jet fuel pump and filled the car up with some spare diesel I had lying around.
Low and behold the car fired up and is now running beautifully.
Now if this part is faulty am I right in saying the car will struggle to start until suction has pulled fuel up through the system?

I think I have found my issue!

Audi want well over 300 for the part so I need to find a cheap or used replacement plus the tool to remove said jet pump sender unit.

I'm struggling to find the part I need, can anyone else point me in the right direction.
The guy at Audi called it an in tank fuel pump but I'm not convinced this s the same thing.
The part I suspect is the sender unit with jet pump ( quattro only) that blows the fuel from one side of the tank to the other over the prop shaft cut out.

This I suspect as the sender is still reading 1/4 tank but one side of the tank must be empty while the other is at 1/4

I managed some time on the car today and it looks like it's been budged in the past. Cover missing and what I think should be a breather? Has been blocked off. Quite a lot of diesel about as well so the seal must be ill too.

Audi say you need special tool T blah blah blah to get this ring out so I knocked myself one up for free.

Well almost free I ran out of mig wire half way through.

And yes I'm fully aware my welding is terrible.
