I'm not sure, I understand your question right, so please forgive me if I will give you a wrong answer.

I had to replace the inner unit about a week ago, and it's not sealed in itself, it is sealed somehow with a gasket in the boot lid. I have the replaced unit, it's intact, however as the gasket became bad due some unknown hit from the outside, it let the water into the unit, so it became unstable, and even the telephone unit became instable for some unknown and strange reason.

Sealed as in glued closed then yes but air tight no. The inner lights have a replaceable reverse light bulb which is open to the elements. The outer lights iirc are sealed

thx morski , did have a plan to remove the indicator strip on the inner and outer and lights and replace with a dynamic strip which are easily sourced , (to expensive to buy the genuine dynamic indicators ).

have you ever taken one apart ?

There are guides on youtube. Basically heat in an oven and prize apart

I made some pictures from my replaced inner tail light for reference, hope these helps to see, how this unit is sealed.

You can see the damage in the gasket material, which was absolutely not shown from the outside, but this caused the electrical failures in my case. I had to replace the entire unit :(

I found my led tail light (boot lid section) not working and showed a fault. On examination the reversing lens showed signs of mild moisture. The led indicator was fine as was the reverse light. I enquirer of Shrewsbury Audi how much a replacement would be -£240 +vat!!!!!!!!! I thought I might remove it and give it a night in the linen cupboard and eh voila, it's working fine. Must have been moisture on the inbuilt pcb. I think I may have got something wet in the boot or got a pressure washer a little near underneath. Certainly worth a try as I gather these do not fail very often.

Inner Left rear indicator has just started playing up on mine :-(
Warning light appears on dash after you first use the left indicator after start up.

Might try removing and leaving in the airing cupboard overnight too. The LED's should really have problems? Only 3 years old.

Any tips on accessing the light unit in the bootlid (Saloon). I'm sure I'll get to it, just dont want to wreck anything else in the process, which I am prone to doing !

Thanks in Advance.

Pm me your email address and I'll scan the dismantle/remount page from ELSAWIN as a pdf. It's very easy - 10 minute job.

Thanks in Advance.Do you definitely have LED indicators. Pre-Facelift cars (in the UK at least) only had LED rear lights if they had Xenon headlights. On my pre-FL car I had the problem you describe and it was cured by replacing the indicator bulb, although in that case it was the outer drivers side unit that was playing up

Yeah, it definitely has Xenons in front, and LED rear units. Thanks for highlighting that though.
Can the leds be replaced if warming the unit up doesn't resolve the issue? Of is it a case of replacing the complete inner unit from Audi?

However is it worth it and whether it is possible to easily source the parts is a differnt discussion. Not sure of your warranty situation but if the car has a full Audi Service history I would have thought you had a good case to get Audi to meet at least some of the cost of a replacement unit as they clearly intend it to last the life of the car having not designed with any serviceable parts

In my case the symptom was simple, the unit worked fine, except the LED turn signal became waeker and weaker as it should act.

This problem started after a high pressure car wash, and took about two days for the unit to completely dry out. If your problem is the same, and you have a problem with the sealing, then the water will disappeare without any other task, as the light unit heats itself up and will dry itself out, but it will not solve the original problem.

So you don't need to remove the unit for now, but wait if it will dry out, but if it will start working again in just days, then you must repair the sealing immediately or you have to replace the entire unit soon.
