Ok guy's.
In terms of reliability. Which common rail is better 1.9tdi or 2.0tdi? I take the 1.9 doesn't have the oil pump failing issue? I'm more worried about the oil pump failing issue than i am the DMF and DPF.
Would be great to see what ye have to say, please share experiences and opinions and info please.
Cheers

Sorry - don't know about either, trying to avoid any CR engine TBH, based on pals ££££ injection equipment horror stories.

bit like asking the best way to die, be shot or drowned.
common rail engines are amazing, fuel atomized at over 20,000 psi. until something goes wrong and cost 8grand to fix.
the engines are fine as well, choose between failed oil pump drives or con rods exiting the block ?? there are some engine codes that dont fail, and some that do that have had a fix, or fixes, or might still fail. pre 2004 pd or even older rotary pump engines, thats where its at.

Giving i'm in the medical world and mechanical world ( i'd prefer to be shot, it's instant) So what which would i come under for that answer 1.9 or the 2.0?
Right oil pump is from the 2.0 lump and con rods exiting is the 1.9 lump. hmm great i'd prefer oil pump (if saved on time).
So your saying by 'that's where its at' i should go for that era? (with cost of insurance and tax here in Ireland) that might not be do able....hmmmmm
Cheers so far, keep the info coming :beerchug:

thing is, 25 years ago vw and audi were building cars like my 80 that just go on and on. change the oil every 10k and timing belt every 50k and it will last almost indefinately, no built in faults. simple fixable parts. ( 1.9 tdi, not the v6 tdi) this lasted until 2004 when it all went bluetits up. the b5 a4 that followed the 80 is a truly amazing car. the b6 after that was just as good but starting to get too technical. the passats were the same, until they made the b6 passat 2004 on.. that was a mess. far too many stupid costly things. not just the engines, electronic steering lock, electronic handbrake. etc... keep clear, buy if you like repairing cars.. if you want good cheap car to last long time, get old one and spend money on bringing it upto date, full service, treat any small minor rusty bits underneath, remove and restore rear axle, they rust, but easy to fix or find another and galvanise it... last forever.

my old 80 is on 356,000 miles and going strong. if i ever lost it ( could only lose it, no one would steel it, but they might borrow it for a few days, or it could get written off in a crash ) then i would replace it with another old 80. the b5 front suspension is complicated and costly to repair. i can rebuild mine for less than 100 notes. i would prefer an old 80 for 500 quid and have to spend a grand doing it up. but then i own a garage so have the tools and facilities to do so..
