Hi everyone...
I'm looking for a B6 Passat to replace my Bora as its not big enough really for 2 kids seats in the back and the mrs in the front... I have a few questions before I buy one if anyone would be able to help?
It needs to be a TDI. Im not sure of the diffrences thought, my Bora is a 150PD ... I have seen a 07 sport I like that just says its 2.0 TDI 138bhp, and a 59 highline thats a 170 CR. What is special about the CR? Are they better? Im more concerned about reliability... although I may have it remapped at a later date. Is there any way to tell by looking if its a CR?
Whats the cam belt change schedule on these? 60k? 80k?
The min spec Im looking for is heated leather seats and parking sensors really. Id like cruise and sat nav but not really bothered about that to be honest... I think that limits me to some sport models, the SEL and highline models.
Is there anything I need to look for or a good thread on here such as a buying guide? I have searched but cant find anything.
Thanks, Neil

welcome to the forum.
are you sure you want a b6 passat ?
perhaps the worst car vw ever made. look in the b6 section at some of the faults and the cost to rectify. dont want to put you off but they are rubbish. buy a younger passat or an audi a4 b5 or b6. they are good cars.

If you buy one keep about £1500 aside always in the bank. ...as you will need it at some point. It's going to cost way more than the Bora to keep it moving.

Could be if he's very unlucky. When I worked at Volkswagen everyone in the workshop agreed that there's no way any of us would buy one. ..some agreed they would have a B6 but only if it was free.

I would definitely recommend aa cover as well. Especially when you get the steering column immobiliser go down. It's a real pain in the A when you have no ignition no power steering and are unable to release the electric handbrake.
Keep the Bora and divorce the wife is my honest opinion.

to be fair, a passat is really no bigger than a bora..
i would never own a b6 passat either, dont like throwing good money away on stupid design faults like balance shafts and oil pumps and all the other rubbish that comes with them. get a good older one, take time getting a real nice example of an audi b5 or b6 and throw enough money at it to make it a1, then keep it forever. one of my customers runs a b5.5 passat, back axle was looking grim so he found a good used one and got it blasted and galvanised. should last forever now. 228,000 miles on that one..

Thanks for the replies... Not really what I was hoping for though :(
Im not sure about the Audi A4s because my mate has a B7 and he said its not as big as his old B5 Passat. I tried our baby seat in his avant and its not much bigger than the Bora. The A4 B6's may be an option but I wanted something fairly big and the Passat appealed because I had a B5 1.9 TDI (110) before the Bora and looking back, it was a great car, just a little old and high milage, and was a fair bit bigger than the Bora.
I was planning on getting an A6 C6 highline. They seem to have similar engine options to the Passat. Is there anything to look out for with one of those?
This is the passat I was interested in - Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI Sport 2007 / 07 @ MCD Cars | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252740366895)

I agree. Get a highline estate around 2005 if you can they really were the most reliable vw out there. Take the drain plugs out of the scuttle and spray the banana bolts on the front hub carriers with wd40 every day and enjoy your motoring. The B6 is as reliable as a pensioner's erection.

Haha.
The 5.5 is ugly though, I really dont like the look of them. I guess they could be made to look nice?

Not as ugly as a regular 4 figure repair bill and a massive maxed out overdraft.

What about a Sharan? I had one and it was perfect for a family.

It needs to be a TDI. <snip>
Why? The faults already referred to in this thread are TDi only
You're not going to get much for sub three grand -- unless you want to do all your own upgrading to provide family reliability. So that you know all the riskier engine faults have been rectified. There are good ones out there though you'll only find that out once you've got it

The B6 is a good looking well driving car , but fundamentally floored with planned obsolescence .
A B5.5 or Skoda is the better reliable option .
I like the B5.5 in wagon form , ticks so many boxes , it's got that 'dubbing' look about it .
As with any car basics , lowered suspension , larger wheels , wheel spacers , tints / privacy shades if no privacy glass , debadge etc .
