All the threads about frosty mornings and driving in snow got me thinking about what is the best/fastest way to warm the car up on a cold morning.

We switched from a Discovery with a heated windscreen and a max heater button, and have just come back from Germany where we had a C-Max with the same, so wondered what to do with an A6 Allroad

Albeit a lot smaller, we can defrost our V-reg Rover 200 a lot quicker than the 2016 Audi

Thanks

On my diesel A6 there is a supplementary electric heating element in the heater matrix. It needs to be enabled in the MMI options by setting to auto.

Once enabled I realised recently that you can hear it cut in and out with a relay click when running from cold, and that the mode of my car has an influence as it seems more prone to cut in on Auto or Comfort rather than Dynamic. The sure-fire way to kick it in is either to set the temp to HI or switch on the demist programme as otherwise it seems to wait a while for the engine revs to be lifted or maybe its waiting for a bit more charge in the battery. I tend to use the HI option initially as I think the air blowing over the matrix in demist doesn't give it chance to warm up. I can get enough heat to melt ice in a minute or two and in about half a mile I'm starting to get warmer air.

Once at a reasonable temperature I simply press and hold the heater Auto button and it continues to warm up in the usual manner set at 22 degrees.

I fortunately have the auxiliary heater on mine, not an option in the UK. As an example I set a timer for when I leave work on the MMI like today and the inside of the car is warmed up and as a consequence no ice on windscreens. I moved from UK to The Netherlands BTW. I'll miss it when I move back...

I've got a system called heatshot fitted. Goes between the washer tank and the jets. It takes 20-30 seconds to heat the fluid which instantly melts Ice and can drive off within 60 seconds. I've just written a fitting guide in the A5 section.

Thanks all for the information. I've switched on the supplementary heater and it got the windscreen clear and the car up to temp reasonably quickly. Still had frozen window seals that wouldn't open 15 minutes later.

Just ordered it. For £39.95 it has to be worth a try.
