I've only got a basic code reader which doesn't tell me what this could be. Passat 2.0tdi BKP. Occasional misfire getting more frequent. Anyone seen this before? Code is 04711-038.

Thanks

Where are you bud? That code doesn't return anything at all on google.
I am in Northampton and happy to scan your car for free if you are anywhere near.
Won't be able to advise much a fix but at least will give you an idea and on to look or ask for in forums.

I'm in Southampton. It might be injector related if I believe ross-tech. I'll change the fuel filter just in case its blocked and maybe resulting in injectors going out of bounds - the old one looked very dark - I was expecting it to look clean.

ross-tech.com says : 17675/P1267/004711 - PD Unit Injector: Cylinder 3 (N242): Regulation Range Exceeded but the code isn't an exact match.

From your code reader that does signify a fault with injector for cyl 3. But we don't know whether this is an intermittent, occasional fault, or continuous as there's no history to show, nor have you cleared the fault to see whether it returns. I don't know what the suffix "-038" means

I'm in SE London but due to come down to Soton before Xmas. Don't know when -- Freemantle, Shirley, Basset, Bargate, docks. Where in Soton are you? Otherwise here's the URL for someone perhaps closer:

thanks. I'll try a filter change and clearing the fault and see if it goes away, I haven't got the tools to attack the injectors so I'll then book it in if it comes back.

There is an injector recall 23H9 for the BKP engine.
If the campaign sticker with entry "23H9" is not fitted (marked in your service book or by sticker on spare wheel well), carry out the work according to the repair instructions.

Identifying the potentially faulty injectors.
Remove cam cover and check the part number –see arrow- on the pump injector element. All pump injector elements with the part number 03G 130 073 D or 03G 130 073 M must be replaced. All other pump injector elements are correct and must not be replaced.

Richard - unless I'm misreading your post, if the campaign sticker 23H9 is not fitted, or marked in the service book, surely the OP should take his car to VW for the injectors to be replaced foc?

When the early injectors went wrong, the engine just stopped. It would be worthwhile making sure the failure prone units are not still in there.

Bonjour... No, you're not reading wrong. Only these injector codes are replaced FOC. Others are left in situ

Can't trust the service department to check as there's been reports of even with those part numbered injectors recently seen they still say "recall doesn't apply to your engine, sir!" Or even "the recall's expired, sir!" That's the usual tripe they're told to say by VWUK...

The repair instructions are contained in Technical Product Information (TPI) transaction number 2027647

VW blame "dirty engine oil" :booty:

... Humbug!

I recall asking my dealer here what were they doing about the 'recall' on injectors in the UK that I'd read about on the internet, his reply was that I shouldn't believe everything I read on the 'net! I then wrote to VW HQ in Germany, but received a reply, from VW France, to the effect that 'we don't replace parts that are working ok'. I eventually got the recall from them a few months later.

They did do a couple of other 'boot sticker' jobs, and a couple of problems under guarantee, without any quibble - probably because they thought I might buy another car from them sometime in the future.

Check the idle balancing on engine measuring block 013 - if any of the values are vastly different then you either have a bad injector or if all values are generally high possibly worn cam lobes.

The code is telling you that your misfire is caused by injector 3. In theory the ecu can detect faulty wiring so this suggests that injector 3 is becoming faulty.

Check the resistance in each injector and from the terminals to the body of each injector. And if nothing then check the resistance in each wire in the loom.
