Just get some 5w-40 TD oil, that had on vw501****** on it, it will be fine, but remember not to mix grades of oil, so if you are unsure of what is in the engine at the moment, then replace all the oil and filter.

hi
5w-40 with the vw501 written on it, does Vw only supply that or can i get it from any vehicle shops?, yeh im going to change the oil and filter as the oil is due a change, so is that the best you'd recommend. want to get the best for it as the mileage is high and want to keep it going for as last as i can, im a true fan of Vw but just dont know much about them lol.
p.s my car isnt the Pd edition could i use the 5w-40 in it and would it be the best for it?
thanks for your help and immediate reply.
much appreciated

VW say,
"Turbo diesel (engine codes AGR, AHF, ALH, ASV): only engine oil in accordance with VW standard 505 00 or 505 01."
Check for these standards on the oil you are looking at which can be purchased in various places.

The best oil i could say get is comma 5w-40 for TDi, that fact it is not a PD engine should not make much differance with this oil. i think the best filters you could get is FRAM i have used them for years and i think that they are good.
If you can not get hold of comma, castrol is fine to use, but i think you are going to pay alot for that and it is mainly the name there you are paying for.
Hope this is of help.
