Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge

Hi all.
Can anybody suggest why my gauge went straight to showing normal operating temperature as soon as I turn on the ignition this morning? Outside temperature was -2.0 and car hasn't been running for 10 hours. Car runs and I'm getting good heat inside the car and radiator fans run (unusually) when sat at idle.

More than likely a faulty coolant temp sensor.

If you have Climatronic you can see engine temperature (see if coolant temperature sensor is working) by setting 19 - 2
