Hi

I have just started to change the Cambelt and Water Pump on my daughters 2003 Golf 1.9Tdi PD100 , the first problem I have come across is that I don't seem to be able to remove the mounting bracket that is bolted to the engine , I have lowered the engine slightly and raised it slightly , but there just does not seem to be the clearance to pull it out , am I missing something here , also I am having a hard time trying to undo the Allen screws to remove crankshaft damper (6mm Allen Key) am afraid I will strip the allen head in the screws , then I will be fxxxxx .
any help idea's on my predicement .
cheers

Spike

undo the dog bone to allow the engine to move forwards to get the mount out. yes, those allen bolts are a pain. dont round them off. hammer a good quality bit in like a snap on and you stand a good chance of getting them out. the main problem is people using cheap bits where the corners round off the bits then round the bolt.

Hi Zollaf

Thanks for that info , will try that , am looking on ebay for a good quality Allen key with 1/2" or 3/8" drive .

SNAP ON HEX SET 4-10mm Allen Keys | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SNAP-ON-HEX-SET-4-10mm-Allen-Keys-/172401591390?hash=item2823ef845e:g:AdcAAOSwx2dYIOG C)

these are the sort you want. you can buy then individually from a van or from ebay when one comes up. yes they are a lot of money but i tell you what, i wouldn't bother with anything else. if that doesnt work then hammer a cheap spline bit in . replace the bolts anyway.

I like both the Gedore set I have (4mm-17mm) and the Bahco set. Both good bits of kit. Though the gedore set wasn't cheap at £105... Bahco set wasn't either to be fair. But they've both stood their ground well with my B5.5 and various machinery around the country. Lol.

Agree with above posts - don't just use a normal 90' bent allen key. get a proper quality bit and make sure it is fully home. Don't know what the other guys think, but I like to try and get a T bar on to turn the bit on tight hex or torx heads and turn it with two hands from both sides of the T handle to get pure torque on the hex bit rather than just a ratchet handle or breaker bar where you end up putting a bending force on the hex bit and bolt head as well. I know it's tight down there in the wheel arch though!
You might want to think about replacing the tensioner stud that goes into the block, along with the belt kit and pump and make sure you torque the tensioner nut correctly when finishing off.

indeed, a ratchet can twist the bit out of the bolt, so a t bar where you can turn both ends is good, or a windy gun if you have one.
