I recon I am going to need a starter soon, getting a stutter mid start at times and noises like it hasn't disengaged properly when the engine has started, just a few seconds at the moment but as the car's an Auto I think it would be best to get it changed before I need trailered away from some remote location. Can anyone check part numbers for me, it's a 2005, BKN engine code, 3.0 TDI quattro avant, 204 bhp or even point me in the right direction. I have been having a wee look tonight and to be honest I am more confused than when I started, no pun intended :)

Get yourself onto GSF.com Looks like a 2.2Kw starter. Part number: 901VG0840. Not cheap at £484, but you can get £100 back if you send them the old starter. Worth calling Audi just out of interest, just to see what they quote. Probably Bosch Part.

Thanks for that. I think the proiblem is that some online sales companies use generic pictures, so not necessarily the actual starter. I don't want to pay over £400, ECP have them for £200 odd but same situation re pics and identifying the correct one. Done some more digging but no luck I am afraid, I may just make an offer on the one I was kooking at and see what happens. Unless someone else has better checking facilities.....

Sorry to hijack your thread Quattrokid,
I'm new here and am looking at getting a 3.0Tdi/Auto in an A4 Avant, sometime in the next year or so.
Do you rate the 3.0/auto? or is it a PITA?
Any thoughts/advice greatly appreciated.

PM sent to Piglet 14.
I have purchased a Starter but I am still unsure if it is the right one, so I would still appreciate the information if anyone can lay their hands on it.
I seem to be getting 2 styles/diagrams basically, one where the starter is quite conventional looking, like this; AUDI A4 B7 2005 - 2008 2.7 TDI 3.0 TDI MANUAL STARTER MOTOR 059911024 | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A4-B7-2005-2008-2-7-TDI-3-0-TDI-MANUAL-STARTER-MOTOR-059911024-/122166715961?hash=i) where when fitted the curved end part will be out of sight, in the bellhousing and the other where the starter end is quite flat at the end, almost as if none of it will protrude into the bellhousing of the gearbox, this type; Audi A4 A6 Seat Skoda Superb Exeo VW 2004-2008 2.0 TDI Starter Motor 03G911023 | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/Audi-A4-A6-Seat-Skoda-Superb-Exeo-VW-2004-2008-2-0-TDI-Starter-Motor-03G911023/272380511193?hlpht=true&ops=true&viphx=1&_trksid=p5197.c100068.m2280&_trkparms=ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140211125758%26meid%3D3 0f406d117984215b913b7dc2bd530fc%26pid%3D100068%26c lkid%3D9118404812736449921&_qi=RTM2108002).
Both are listed for some 2.0 TDIs and some 3.0 TDIs. Does this mean they both fit, I would doubt it but I can't make sense of it myself and the online parts catalogues are not specific enough.

Well a saga has ensued following my starter woes.
The stater I bought was in fact the wrong one as I had suspected but the recon one the garage got in, didn't fit either. They sent another and it too didn't fit. When I say didn't fit, it fitted the space and bolted up but there was a rubbibng noise when the car was running which would go away if the tightness of the bolts was backed off. On inspection the gear wheel was slightly longer than the original, so probably rubbing on the back of the flywheel behind the ring gear.
The choice I was given at this point was recondition the original several days off the road) or buy a brand new one from Audi. I had already priced the new one and I didn't think it was too bad at just over £200 so we went for that. Problem was TPS didn't have one is stock and so it took 2 days to come. It is now starting and running perfectly, the bill was a bit higher than I first thought but to be honest given the hassle they had and the fact it was a brand new starter, it could have been much worse.
Anyway I have my baby back and brand new Audi starter, so I am not that worried about anyone else or it stopping in some car park miles from anywhere and needing towed to a Garage as it is an automatic.
My advice to anyone with a similar problem would have to be, if you can afford the new Audi unit, buy it. An Audi specialist may have been a better bet for getting the job done, this is dubious but they would likley have better info and know the pitfalls. Main pitfall is getting the acurate OE part number but even with this recon units may not fit without some modification, hope this helps others who may read this and thanks to all who offered info and advice :)
