Have this from vcds lite

00516 closed throttle (idle) position switch f60 2700 implausible signal

00532 supply voltage b+ 07-10 signal to low intermittent

Golf doesnt idle right, rpm meter moves up and down, engine hunts.

Any help, advice would be appreciated

EDIT: also hole in exhaust at cat, dont think its related, just noting incase...

EDIT AGAIN: 1999 1.4 Petrol

There are three different 1.4 16v engines you could have, AHW, AKQ or APE with two distinctly different engine management systems, Marelli on the AHW and AKQ and Bosch on the APE but the AHW is the one prone to problems. I would suspect that the throttle cable has been set too tight to try and hold the idle up to stop it stalling so what I would do is remove and clean the throttle body and then set the cable so it was slack, just tight enough to fully open the butterfly with the accelerator floored. Then the ECU's learnt values need to be erased in Adaptation 00 and after that, the TB synchronized to the ECU in Basic Settings 098. Ignore the other code, the AHW does that.

Just collected it last night, didn't know much on it. Marelli rings a bell from auto scan, I guess I should have posted the results in full. Thanks again for the help, I'll post results over weekend

Removed and cleaned the TB, couldnt find any wd40 or plus gas, so used petrol... Left it abit before refitting lol

There was alot of mayo gunk going into the top of the air box, are these known for having breather issues? It doesnt get used much. 10 miles trip to work and back each day

Then the ECU's learnt values need to be erased in Adaptation 00 and after that, the TB synchronized to the ECU in Basic Settings 098

All these options are in the engine module of vcds lite? i remember seeng basic settings but not adaptation( bare with me mate, still getting used to vcds )

joe67

all good, i see those

i tryed to clear the fault code in the engine module and it kept returning a second later

joe67
16-10-2016, 02:25 PM
cleaned tb and refitted, everything connected as it was..

removed throttle cable circlip, used a pole to hold accelerator down, pulled the cabLE back just to the point were throttle body butterfly was open, though can open it alittle more by hand..

heres a vid off the vcds process, getting error in the adaptation field, also now getting basic setting not complete fault code, the engine refuses to idle and cuts out

The throttle isn't closed, you can see this in the measuring block where is says "part throttle", disconnect the cable completely. At WOT the butterfly just needs to hit 180 degrees, the cable should not be like a guitar string! When you have closed throttle showing in Basic Settings 098, click go and wait for "ADP OK" then wait 30 seconds and ignition off for 30 seconds.

joe67
17-10-2016, 02:13 PM
i disconnected the cable from the TB, cleared the codes ( basic settings fault code returns ), left the cable disconnected and tryed 098, still getting the same part throttle message..

looking at a replacement tb???

Bridge contacts 3 and 7 of the plug to the TB, Measuring Blocks 098 Zone 3 MUST change to "Idling"

You have a faulty throttle body.

joe67

replaced the TB today, its changed to idle now without bridging pins, not closed throttle, disconnect cable again?? it still says error in the last field, that will be why i cant complete the alignment?

edit: fault codes

tryied it with the cable off, i did see it change to adp ok for a second and to error when i switched from measuring blocks to basic settings.. its from a breaker,

That is the correct TB number.

Is your copy of VCDS Lite registered?

By your ECU number it looks like your car is a 2000 model year version.

joe67
20-10-2016, 12:42 PM
Yes its a registered version on vcds lite. Just matched the part number, glad its the correct one. It does seem alittle better new the new TB, though it stuggles to idle.

When it goes to ADP OK and error, are you getting the same fault code? When I have had this, putting a battery charger on whilst doing the adaptation can help as the voltage is higher. You are doing this without the engine actually running aren't you? Just with the ignition on.

It goes straight to error when i first put 098 into basic settings, i then switch to measuring blocks using the tab at the bottom left and it shows the same results, i then switch back to basic settings and for a split second its shows ADP OK then quickly changes to error.

Getting the same two fault codes , soon as i hit clear in the engine block they return straight away

Doing it with the ignition on only.

Ill try it with the charger now.

The engine is hot when doing this, above 85 degrees? The airbag fault code suggests you have a voltage problem. Ignition on, could you get me the values of the following fields in Measuring blocks 08,

Display Group/Field
001 zone 2 & 4
002 zone 3
003 zone 3
004 zone 4
005 zone 4
098 zone 1, 2, 3 and 4

joe67
20-10-2016, 09:27 PM
hopefully this is what your after

Display Group/Field
001 zone 2 & 4 2: engine speed 700-800 = 0 /min 4:conditions = 10001000
002 zone 3 ecu supply 11.5-14.5
003 zone 3 throttle angle 3.0
004 zone 4 or-id-pt=ft 0100xxxx = 00000000
005 zone 4 tv cal. xx000000 = 00000100
098 zone 1, 2, 3 and 4
1:throttle g69 0/500-5.000 = 4.250v does move upto 4.267 at times
2:throttle g88 0.500-5.000 = 3.556v does move to 3.570 at times
3:engine mode = idle
4:adaptation mode idle/ok/error = error

Crasher

001/2 shows the engine is running, I could do with the figures for just ignition on as well, you aren't doing the Basic Settings 098 with the engine running are you?

001/4 being 10001000 shows there is a fault code stored (which we know) and that there is a lambda regulation error. You need to look at the relevant data block, so 001/3 engine running should be a Sinewave from 0>.9v

002/3 is that fluctuating from 11.5>14.5 all the time? It should be stable

003/3 ok

004/4 should be 01000000

005/4 00000100 shows “Signal between the throttle valve potentiometer G69 and the potentiometer of the throttle valve G88” is implausible, in simple terms the second hand TB is FUBAR

098 1, 2 don’t make sense with 3 confirming the TB is faulty

This is the problem with 16 year old second hand parts, the difficulty is though that a new TB from VW is £506.38 but ECP have them for £190.99 for a cheap copy or what looks like an original VDO unit for £239

joe67
21-10-2016, 04:20 PM
all those results were just ignition on only, it had been for a drive before to get it to temp... then engine off and ignition on.. ill update the rest asap

Crasher
21-10-2016, 04:28 PM
Sorry, I misread the text. It does look like another faulty TB.

whats your thoughts on this

THROTTLE BODY FOR VW GOLF MK IV 1.4 16V, 030133064F | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/THROTTLE-BODY-FOR-VW-GOLF-MK-IV-1-4-16V-030133064F-/161654252845?hash=item25a358252d:g:hokAAOSweW5VFq9 R)

Crasher
21-10-2016, 05:19 PM
It is impossible to say, certainly I would not use it on a customers car but it isn't a drive by wire TB so it could be worth taking a chance. It has to be better than 16 year old second hand.

joe67
21-10-2016, 10:00 PM
aye, has to be worth a try. the only thing that gets me, is the fault code appeared and replaced the original fault code after the first throttle body was cleaned, same code two throttle bodys... ive seen on other forums wiring and ecu being the worst case relating to 00282 - Throttle Position Actuator(V60)
26-00 - Output Open

if it was in your workshop, youd try another throttle body first?

Crasher
21-10-2016, 10:52 PM
From the incorrect idle switch reading I would have fitted an OE throttle body or refused to go any further. I have reached the point of refusing to use any second hand parts of any description, over the last 30 odd years they have cost me so much time and stress that it is no longer worth it.

joe67
25-10-2016, 12:48 PM
breakers sent out another TB, another with the same error message for adaptation. i know its old parts, but the same problem with 3 TB? has to be wiring or ecu?

Crasher
25-10-2016, 01:24 PM
If the cable is detached and the TB spotlessly clean I can't see what else 00282 can be. We need to delve deeper into the wiring so I need the cars build month so PM me your reg.

joe67
25-10-2016, 05:40 PM
With some help found the fault. Is the plug or wiring to the throttle body. Someone's tried to repair it before

Crasher
25-10-2016, 06:41 PM
You may need a new plug, terminals or terminal extraction tool.

Crasher
26-10-2016, 04:09 PM
It was built 05/05/99, the plug you need is VW part number 4A0 973 714 G which is £9 and the repair wires you need are 0.5-mm, 000 979 019 EA @ £5.04 each (they are double ended and you would need 3) and 1.0-mm, 000 979 131 EA (you need 1) @ £3.65, that is if all the wires need repairing, using a terminal extractor you could save some.

joe67
16-02-2017, 05:12 PM
the wiring was changed, i removed a plug and part of the wirining harness and soldered the replacement one on, it has helped, car is running better...

sometimes it cuts out when slowing down and turning left, any ideas ? :D

Crasher
16-02-2017, 05:35 PM
Was the throttle body matched to the engine in Basic Settings 098? Are there a fault codes stored? A common failure is the power steering pressure switch, you have to watch it in measuring blocks as it does not always come up as a fault code.
