I have a Passat B6 05-11 2.0 TDI Diesel (11/08 - 11/10) with an engine code of CBDC and it sometimes fails to start especially if it's been running, when it fails to start the glow plug light on the dash board flashes.
I had to call the RAC out in the early hours of the morning and a guy turned up plugged in his box of tricks and reset something which got me home OK, he said it was something to do with the glow plugs.
I bought a new set of glow plugs from Euro Car Parts which are 4.4V ones and these are the same as the ones that I removed, after fitting the fault is still there so I am inclined to believe it is something to do with the glow plug controller.
I have looked in the fuse box next to the battery and there is only one 5 pin relay in there and I cannot find where the controller is located so I can source a replacement.
Does anyone know where it could be on my car.
Once the engine starts it drives fine with no problems at all.
Many thanks in advance.

Anyone, someone said it was under the E Box but I've had a look and I can't see anything obvious, do I have to take the car battery out to gain access to it.
I've just ordered a cheap code reader so hopefully that will be here tomorrow and I can see what the error code says but in the meantime here is a picture of my E Box if anyone knows where the Glow Plug Controller is hiding I'd appreciate it:

Gowplug relay should be under e-box but sometimes a jumper is fitted and the relay is on the central electrics control unit under the drivers side dashboard. Glowplugs must be ngk or vw. Anything else will probably damage the controller.

I have replaced the glow plugs with Bosch 4.4V glow plugs, the ones that I removed were also 4.4V glow plugs.
Does the car battery have to be removed to gain access to the controller if it is under the e-box, I cannot tell if there is anything underneath the e-box with the battery in situ.
I will remove the panel and see if I can spot the controller under the dashboard, can you tell me what it is I am looking for, I believe it is like a relay only with more pins.

Well the code reader was a fat lot of help, doesn't show any codes, not sure if it is even reading anything, the B6 Passat is Can Bus so needs a reader that is compatible with that, the one I got is only suitable for up to 2005 or so :(
I'll take the panel off tomorrow and see if I can spot the relay in question, probably just get a new one of those if they aren't too expensive.

You quote your car as "Passat B6 05-11 2.0 TDI Diesel (11/08 - 11/10) with an engine code of CBDC" This will have OBDii Canbus. So if you're using some older scanner, then yes, it might not show anything at all. The only way is not to buy cheeep on eBay but get the real VCDS and let it tell you what the car's saying

There must be someone in/around Oxford that'll do you an Autoscan for beer tokens. Have a look on the VCDS user locator map. Here's the URL:

I would only fit ngk or vw glowplugs to a passat.

The replacements I've fitted are 4.4V Bosch Glow Plugs. Just trying to find how I can get the code read, I suspect the glow plug controller is on it's way out as the car does start and run OK, the fault is intermittent, I'm a bit loathe to replace it until I've had it confirmed.
Next purchase is a code reader that actually works on my car, I've heard some good things about the iCarsoft i908 so I may give one of those a try and see if it can really read the codes, VCDS is obviously the way to go but I can't afford one of those yet.

iCarsoft 930i for canbus Jaguar is not much short of £100 anyways. So guess theirs for VW/Audi would be around the same?
You can get ELM327 blue tooth chip with an Android phone "Torque "app for much less. But both do much less than VCDS micro-can from Gendan that costs £214 inc.
I was in mid-argument with local main dealer when I got mine direct from Ross-Tech in the US coz there wasn't any agent over here then
And that cost me what with Fed-Ex, VAT, import duty, clearance "fee", foreign currency credit card scam exchange rate and "fee". But it's saved me much more than that over the years

I've managed to read the code and it says it's P2563 which says it a Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor Circuit: Implausible Signal
My understanding is this is a generic code so may not be the greatest of help, looking around the forums it is possible that it could be something to do with the turbo actuator.
When the car starts it runs fine, the fault only seems to occur when I try to restart the car and then it only happens sometimes.

Split actuator diaphragm, VW do a repair kit BUT it must be carefully calibrated.

Under DTC I get 000022 Bank 1: CMP Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
The cam belt was replaced fairly recently, probably less than 2000 miles ago.
When the engine starts it runs fine so I doubt it's jumped a tooth and not sure if it's possible to slip a bit.
Would the turbo actuator diaphragm cause the above DTC codes.

Cam timing set by the "Tipex and pray" method.......

So what do I need to do to sort it out, does it need something replacing or does it need to go into a garage and be retimed?

The timing needs to be set using the crank locking plate and cam pins.

The timing belt was replaced using the proper crank locking plate and the pin, I watched them doing it.
I've managed to resolve the problem now, thanks everyone who posted help it was much appreciated.

I was checking around to make sure all the connectors were pushed fully home and noticed that there was a shiny bit on the vacuum pipe fitting on the actuator, I pushed the rubber pipe all the way down and the car hasn't missed a beat since so I assume it wasn't getting a proper vacuum seal.
As an aside when I removed the plastic engine cover some of the rubber grommets broke apart, some of the grommet stayed on one of the balls, another just fell apart completely.
I went on Ebay and did a search and found a few sellers had them for £4.50 or £5 each, anyway I was passing the VW garage earlier so I popped in and asked how much they were from them, £3 each incl VAT so I bought 4 and now the plastic cover is secured back where it belongs, not everything on Ebay is a bargain!

The part number is V07C 103 226 if anyone needs any.
