Hi all. I am a historic on/off member in here but it's been a while so decided to start over again :) My current car (S4) is soon to be gone due to new job that involves travel and I'm fixated on a C6 A6 TDI as a replacement. So, what should I be watching out for? I've owned a rake of VAG TDIs in the past including A4s, Boras and Golfs but this'll be my first A6. I was focused on bagging a 2008 but I've since spotted a few 2009 TDIe's with higher mileage within budget. One in particular iwht a great history has 140k miles. Any thoughts on this?

Tips and feedback welcomed as I'm keen not to buy a duff car!!

Hi. I'm almost 3 weeks into ownership of my first A6 and it's a 2,0tdie s-line. Not the highest powered engine but nippy enough. She's a big ole bus after all. And I think the "e" in its name means economy. It's working for me so far, coming from the 2.4 petrol A4.
The interior is great on this and I feel right at home when I'm in it. Only real problem for me so far is I can't get the bluetooth working. Things seem expensive to retrofit so my advice would be to make sure it has all the toys you want and that they all work properly.

I have a 2.0 TDIe SE and its now on 130K it runs like a dream, Make sure that the car you get is on the fixed mileage service intervals and not the Flexible as this will make a big difference.

The car is a big bus, if you are doing a lot of miles then expect to go through tires i do around 6 a year and i have Goodyear efficiency grip tires.

If you are doing a lot of miles then you need to take into account the amount of servicing that you will need to do also.

Do your research regarding which variant of MMI you want in the car and what level of toys as to add these in is not cheap.

Have you made your phone discoverable and then told the A6 to search? When the A6 finds the phone, select it. Remember the pin and select "yes" (I think it is) and then select the A6 on your phone followed by the pin.
I thought it was a bit of a faff the first time I linked my to my Samsung Galaxy s6.... (just thought I would try to help) oh... do it when the car is stationary.

As mentioned.. make sure it's on fixed mileage... the CAHA engines are better when they have had an oil and filter every 8000 miles or less.
My 2010 Le Mans 2.0tdi averages around 42.8mpg so it's not too bad for a big old bus..
Just had to replace a rear parking sensor. Cam belt is due soon... so i have to get the full kit ordered..

I have but it still won't find it. I use a Sony Xperia for the record. So does the missus. Tried with a mate's I phone 6 but still no joy. It's a touchy little system eh?

Yup... the key is.. (or in my case.. 3G MMI) the car has to find the phone and offer the PIN code. It took me a while.. but eventually got there in the end... and I had to do it last week with my new work phone..

Thanks for replies gents, really helpful. I'm ironically now looking at a 2008 2.7? Any thoughts on these in terms of common issues reliability? Car has covered 148k miles but was serviced @ 90k, 116k and 135k?? On reflection this doesn't seem ideal considering some of your comments above on intervals :)

Ok I have been running a 2007 Le Mans Quattro 2.7 for 3 years now.... still love mine ... suspension is hard, engine (get it remapped) .....make sure it doesn't growl on cold or warm start up .... watch out for swirl flap issues however post 2007 cars have better more durable parts. if you hear a sustained growl for 2 seconds beware ..although not an emergency, this noise means a chain tensioner is screwed and loosing oil pressure so the growl is the chain slapping the metal casing... not an easy complete fix without engine out. Just negotiate 1k of the price!
After all of that please remember this is a heavy car and is heavy on tyres especially if you are on Quattro ....23k tyre changes for me.

Quattro will definitely wear tyres more evenly, I don't consider 23k miles particularly bad for changes, but as I have winter wheels/rubber for 3-4 months the wear is slightly more spread, so summer will me 3yrs, winter probs 4yrs.

If you are considering a 2.7, you may as well also consider the 3.0, purely because the engine is more than 10% more powerful, therefore when remapped it will be 20% more than a 2.7, even with the softest map. I have exceeded 900 miles from a tank of careful non-stop driving (2x400 mile trips)

Before purchase it's certainly worthwhile scanning with VCDS to check if there are any serious faults with it, if the seller refuses to even consider then walk away.

Great replies thanks gents. Quick update, I had to reduce my budget from circa £6k to a solid £5k. I'm in the process of leaving a full time position to start up my own consultancy and need that £1k as an additional buffer! Typically, when you want a car there never seems to be the right one available (and when you don't the market is flooded with them!) and admittedly £5k isn't a huge budget! But, found a 2008 2L TDI with only 98k miles, full black leather, sat-nav, etc etc and 18" alloys. Also FSH and MOT. Just waiting to hear back about timing belt. I've not seen the car (and no photos yet on dealers website) but taken the plunge and put a returnable deposit on it. It's Oyster grey too which I quite like :) If the car is as described, all going well I'll collect next week. First thing's first, off for a remap so need advice on which company/map to use as there seems to be hundreds out there doing it :) And my B5 S4 goes this Saturday morning. Sad day :(
