Hi all,

New to the forum but no stranger to the audi brand having previously had a 2014 a3 and a 2004 TT.

I am looking to buy a new car in the new year and have settled on the B7 A4 avant. Always been a fan of the A4 avant and prices for the B7 seem suprisingly reasonable.

My budget is £3.5k so I am looking at those with 100k+miles. It needs to be an auto and at the moment I am drawn to either the 1.8T/2.0TFSI or the 2.0TDIs.

I think both of those need a cambelt change every 5 years/75k miles and I understand its a good idea to get the waterpump done at the sametime?

Is there anything else to look out for on these? Anything to avoid if I come across it?

Just after something reliable and nice to look at/be in essentially...

Cheers,
Ryan

If you go down the tfsi route make sure it's had frequent oil changes as it can suffer from the oil strainer getting blocked and reducing oil pressure to the head/cam chain and tensioner

Thanks for the heads up, I guess whatever I go for it's a case of making sure servicing has taken place regularly. Are any of the available engines particularly reliable/unreliable?

They've all got there problems mate just do plenty of research on Google on what to look out for. You can get good results and there are plenty of forums either via Internet or social media. I had to pull the motor out my 2005 a4 b7 tfsi quattro and do lots on the engine £1500.00 on it and luckily as I'm a technician no labour

If you go for diesel avoid the early ones with a chain driven balance shaft's,even the later gear driven shaft's can suffer from hex oil pump drive failure, probably the 140bhp is a better option the 170bhp has a dpf fitted and can be a pain for blocking, all model's need the oil pressure given a good looking at.

£250-£400.
The autos aren't the best on the 2.0. Search for multitronic problems.
