fault code p1144 mass or air flow

right help again got the vag-com program and it has given me the above fault code with the following message:

p1144 mass or air flow circ open/short to ground.

can someone clarify this as the maf unit as i have been having acceleration problems between 1000 and 2000rpm, symptoms are plucking then clears.
car is an a4 avant tdi se 1.9 2001 115bhp model.

any help with the code would be brill and suggestions about curing the problem will be gratefully recieved.

just to clarify, the plucking is only on acceleration and clears once over about 2000rpm, it happens in all gears and is really annoying. any help or suggestions would be useful as i have searched the forums and not found any symptoms similair to mine so please HELP!!!!!:biglaugh:
