Hello guys,

I'm seeking help from you because I have nowhere to go. I have acquired an 1999 Golf 4, 1.6L petrol with the engine code AKL. I got it cheap because the engine was misfiring and was burning oil but the body was in a amazing condition. I got an engine from ebay, with warranty, and I've swapped it by myself in my backyard. After replacing the spark plugs, spark plug leads, ignition coil, water temperature sensor and the throttle body, I noticed that the engine still misfires. I've got a VAG-COM diagnostic cable from ebay and I had couple of errors on it. I've started to replace all the sensors (Coolant temp sensor, lambda sensor.). After adjusting the the new throttle body, I have noticed the idle of the car is rough when the engine is cold and also misfires at idle but when you drive it on the motorway it doesn't feel like misfires. I've deleted all the errors in the ECU and also I made another scan. The things that are coming now are the following:

00523 - Intake Air Temp Sensor (G42)
30-00 - Open or Short to B+

00520 - Air Mass / Air Flow Sensor (G70)/(G19)
31-00 - Open or Short to Ground

I will replace the MAF sensor this friday but I can't find where is located the Intake Air Temp sensor. Can anyone please tell me where exactly I can find this sensor? I really want to fix my issue with the car because it's annoying misfiring all the time when waiting at a red light and the smell of petrol.

Any other suggestions what I can do to fix my misfire problem?

Thanks anyone in advance for all your help!

They are both in the same part, check the wiring for breaks as the both use the same power supply. Only buy a genuine VW AMM.

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply. Tomorrow morning I will check the wiring and also I will try to clean it. Do you think this can cause a misfire?

From my very first experience of a badly behaved AKL in a very early 8P Audi A3 back in 2000 for the wife of the boss of Febi Bilstein UK I would say yes, a failed AMM can make them run like ****!

I ran out of ideas. I have changed the engine because was burning too much oil and had a problem with one of the pistons. I thought this will stop the misfire but it didn't. I have changed all the things I imagine can create a misfire (spark plugs, spark plugs leads, ignition coil, air filters, petrol filter, throttle body). It didn't fixed my problem either. Now I ordered the maf sensor and I will try to replace it because this is the last error code that comes on a diagnostic. I hope this will fix my problem because I've wasted over 250 pounds in the engine :(.

Don't fit an aftermarket sensor, not even Bosch, buy it from the dealer, Cooks if it still is from when I lived on the Triangle....

I've got a genuine one from a friend who has the same engine and his works great. My car still misfires. I have tried to adjust the throttle body using VCDS but under group 098 or 060 I've got nothing. I was unable to adjust it with VCDS and I don't know why :(.

Use Basic Settings 04 in group 098 for an AKL but you MUST clear the learned values in Adaption 10, group 0 first and do that three times, read save yes.

This is what I have in group 098... I've done what you said about adaption, read and save.

That is a very old copy of VAG-COM; version 3.1? I think you are in Basic Settings 04 there but it is YEARS since I used that version I am using beta 16.3.0 now! In zone 3 the binary display 00000000 indicates all the parameters are correct and in zone 4, 01 indicates the adaption is in progress so the throttle body should now be matched. Then you have to wait 15 seconds and turn off the ignition and wait at least 15 seconds, turn the ignition back on, wait and then start. If you have cleared the learned values in Adaptation 10 block 00 three times then you SHOULD get a good idle if everything else is OK.

I use vag-com 409.1-S

409 came out around 15 years ago and I can't remember it's functionality let alone the shareware version which I have never used, will it allow you to access the right side of the screen in advanced functions?

I can access those functions but sometime gives me errors. Which version do you recommend to get?

A proper registered and legal USB dongle form Ilexa.

A proper registered and legal USB dongle form Ilexa.

I'll do that but first I need to know if it's working to adjust my throttle body. Which version do you have?

as above

I need to find someone with a registered version to try to adjust the throttle body first. I don't want to spend some money for the vag-com and then not to work

Tried to adapt the throttle body at a mechanic who has a good diagnostic but still misfires. I noticed my spark plug leads zaps really bad when the engine is on. If you are placing something metallic near the leads, you can see the electricity going thru. Is this ok? Could this be my misfire problem? The leads are new but not genuine.

You need better OE quality leads, they are not expensive (VW part number 06A 905 409 H) even genuine at £63.60 full retail and aftermarket you can get top quality sets from BBT, Bosch, Hitachi, and Valeo and Euro Car Parts do what looks like a decent set for £28.49 although they do not not specify the brand, their part number 409445210.

Why does your engine have a fishing rod in it?
