I love my new Audi, although I sometimes yearn for my old Lupo where life was much simpler.... and here's another case.

So I put my reg into EuroCarParts, and there's about 9 oil filters to choose from, some which are about £3-£4 and some which are £8-£9. Why the big price difference? So I phone them.... not a scooby between them. So I go googling, and it seems some are bigger than others and some are smaller, but they have better filtration and have a bypass valve which is less likely to trigger. Do the cheap ones not have a bypass valve at all then?

Gahh, which is the correct filter to use, in particular help from those who use EuroCarParts lol :P :aargh4: A part number would do actually because I can give that to Euro and they'll give me their product code.

So:
Cheap one : | Car PartsRetailer (http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Audi_A4_1.8_2003/p/car-parts/regular-service/car-service-parts/oil-filter/?501440049&1&e4fd9eff97ea6962595e2e7308fd3855c19057c0&000231)
OEM Part Number is 068 115 561B

Slightly more expensive one: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Audi_A4_1.8_2003/p/car-parts/regular-service/car-service-parts/oil-filter/?501440109&1&eac416590c7e8aa4a087524e3b01c26f4e22833a&000231
OEM Part Number is 068 115 561B

No explanation why, then this ****** which is nearly a tenner?: | Car PartsRetailer (http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Audi_A4_1.8_2003/p/car-parts/regular-service/car-service-parts/oil-filter/?501441309&1&3e35be545dc29291843967df799025e89ecafd07&000231)
OEM Part Number is 068 115 561F

On CP4LESS, their sister site, the £10 is listed as having a Bypass Valve with an opening pressure of: 2.5 bar, but the OEM one is supposed to have 3 bar?

Now I'm quite happy to pay a tenner for a filter, but how do I know which is the right one. Seems to be a topic of debate here:
1.8T oil filter, 06A 115 561 or larger 068 115 561 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/73215-1-8T-oil-filter-06A-115-561-or-larger-068-115-561)

Madness.

Ok, so did further research

The cheap one is a Mann W940/25 and the expensive one is a Mann W940/66.

Now to find out the difference.....

There's also the W950/4

and there is the diesel one which is bigger but better on a 1.8t as it gives slightly more oil volume to help with them not sludging up.

From reading, I get the impression that's the 25, the 4 is from the EuroVan and god knows what the 66 is from!!!

Why not just buy a genuine one

Why not just buy a genuine one

because that will be a MANN or a WIX in a vw box for twice the price.

And won't include free delivery and won't even necessarily be the right one (if my local VW are anything to go by...)

Can you measure the existing one?

I only use MANN filters, air, fuel, oil & cabin( pollen)

On Eurocarparts you have to register with your email address etc & then get usually 33% off the prices with the codes in email

501440089 Eurocarparts part no.

It's for a 1984 Volvo 760 2.4L but it fits just fine, has the same pressure specs and is much larger than the standard filter.

Been using this for the last 5k without issue

euros are normally ok for oil filters if you put in your correct reg number. unless they may have changed the oil filter part between models you may need to buy one and check if not take it back. the one for my 1.9tdi was spot on first time

They're usually great, but the price difference was confusing me..It's simply a larger filter, but possibly not as good filtration me thinks.

Bigger filters have a larger capacity so in theory last longer. Filtration is more down to the quality of the filter material and surface area.
Oil quality and how often you change it, is in my opinion, more important than the size or brand of an oil filter.

I do agree, but it's worth pointing out that Mann's specs are actually different for the TDI filter Audi started recommending. There's a thread about it somewhere, but basically the updated filter had slightly less filtration efficiency and the bypass valve was also activated at less pressure. Whether that bothers you or not is up to you. Let's not forget early Beetle's (and many cars) had no filter at all :D

You are probably right about the oil quality, although so long as it meets the spec set by VW, I don't really see an issue. More importantly, is how often you change it for me. All oil starts to break down after about 6k miles, so I reckon the latest you should leave it is about 8k?

Don't agree about the brand of filter not being important. I've used Mann for years, partly because their brand is known as knocking out high quality German filters. I've heard of people using those Crosland ones (basically cheap Eastern filters) sold by ECP and then collapsing a few thousand miles down the line.

I always use the genuine 068 115 561F, this is the one that is called up by TPS for my BEX 190 Quattro s line. Longlife 3 oil changed every 5K to keep the metal spinny parts happy as a pig in ****!
