Can't move the car. Is there a way to release it just to get home?

Nope

A scanner if it has the spec, will rewind calipers enough to get the brake pad out ......................... presumably what you are alluding too

As you can imagine it is very dangerous to drive with rear brakes disconnected and not to be done under any circumstances

You need a tow truck

I'm just looking to release it so I can drive home and get the wheel off. Have new discs and pads to put on thinking the pads and discs have gone so low that the parking brake has reached max limit extended....

yes that's probally what has happened , mine did the same and though stiff to rewind with the VAG tool , works ok and so put on new disk for thickness

Anyway you still need a scanner to rewind the EPB like an autel vag 505 or vcds enough to get the brake pads out.

Can you join the AA right now and get them to tow you ........................... its probally cheapest option

You might have green flag through the bank account or home insurance ?

Typically, recovery has just elapsed and no option with bank or home insurance. If I could just release the bloody thing to get home I'd be fine. Have no scanner to rewind it. Might see if I can lever it back enough to get it to engage... #outofoptions

I have used this method (once in the nine years of my ownership of this '06MY) and it does perform a "hard reset" of the EPB control module.
It may work for you:
Disconnec the battery for 10 minutes then reconnect again. (you will get steering wheel and traction control icons on your dash when you drive off but these will clear after a few hundred yards)
Press the footbrake for 35 seconds, then whilst continuing to press the footbrake, press in and hold the EPB button in for 10 seconds, start the car, (still holding in the button and foot on brake).
The car’s computer will restart and the problem might be (temporarily) fixed.

This is also a useful procedure to use after changing the EPB switch if faults don’t immediately clear.

Worth a try? Can't hurt
