Battery Light Flicker

I have a 1999 Golf 1.6 8v (AEH) Auto
When the ignition is switched to Pos. 2, before starting the engine, the battery light intermittently flickers off then immediately back on again.
The battery is fairly new and is holding 12.8V and 14.4V when alternator is charging.
Any ideas?

dodgy ignition switch contacts on that age car ? can you do continuity test or bypass to test?

Could you please give me some more specific details of exactly what I'm checking/ bypassing?

see this thread here and the exploded view of the ignition barrel / switch - you might just need to replace the switch part. I think this thread relates to mkIII golf but gives you an idea. I'm not saying this is definitely your fault but one area I would be checking first.
