View Full Version : Oil consumption
Hi Guys
My 272 has gone through about 2 litres of oil in about 8ks. Should I be worried?
My 177 and 190 didn't use a drop from new to first service but my 272 has used 2l.
The dealer said its nothing to be concerned about as up to 7l between service is classed as normal. This seems excessive to me.
Even my old track car didn't use a drop after a full track day.
I know the 4 cylinders tend to use less but 2 litres in the v6 seems a bit high.
What are you guys using?
Cheers

47000 miles and has never needed topping up. I would be concerned and keeping an eye on it.

Newbie here, but been lurking for a long time. A6S, I also have a 3.0tdi Quattro (218) bought new in June 2015. My 4th Audi, we also currently own an A3 1.4TFSI.
My car has consistently used oil and has just gone through 10,000 miles. Serviced at 9,000 miles. Mine has a very similar consumption of circa 2 litres at 9,000 miles. I have done 1,000 miles since the service (a month ago) and the level has dropped again :-( I like to drop it into sport and take it up to 4,000 revs when the roads allow, so I do not pootle around all the time. My concern is that our previous A4 (a 2006 2.0TFSI), also owned from new, used 1 litre per 1,000 miles by the time it had reached 90k miles. But there was a know issue with those engines.
Similar story of "it is normal" from 2 different dealers. After spending £40k+ it does somewhat detract from what is otherwise a brilliant family bus. Just been to France for 2 weeks and it was awesome, even fully loaded. I have been advised by the selling dealer to contact Audi UK after 18 months. I do not think it is normal either, especially as I am looking to keep the car long term.
It's good to know I'm not the only one.
I remember the first couple thousand miles used about a litre so I just put that down to the engine breaking in. The last 5k or so has used a litre. Will keep an eye on it as you guys have said. I'm just a bit sad and check the oils almost every time I fill up. The mmi makes it so easy to do that and I usually top up when it's in the middle somewhere.

I'm at over 10k with the same engine, just needed a little less than 1 litre 2k ago. The manual says that "depending on how you drive and the conditions in which the car is used. Oil consumption can be up to 0.5 ltr per 1000km" and that it is likely to be higer in the first 5000km.
So your car is well within tolerances considering that it could have used 6.5ltrs based upon the spec. Assuming 8000ks mean miles rather than Kms.
That's what the dealers pretty much said
About 7 litres between 10k services is acceptable. That's an oil change in itself.
7l of Castrol or shell helix ultra is about £100 probably more. If it did that I would be getting rid of it.

I'm in the same boat, using 1 litre at approx 5,000 miles, has slowly got to this level, now at 70,000 miles, but seems to have levelled off, but I monitor and keep a log of useage.
Cheapest source for oil I have found is ebay from Germany, can get 5 l containers rather than UK 4 litre. Even with postage it is much cheaper.
I've got about 7 1litre bottles in the garage to go through first. Used to get a bottle free every time it went in for service and winter checks so have accumulated quite a few as the first 2 Audi didn't use a drop. Only this one.
It's good to know a cheap source for oil.
