Hi,

I have a knocking noise coming from the front n/s on my 2000 V 1.6 Golf when going over a speedbump or pothole. It has done 70k miles and has a full fsh. Could anyone tell me what sort of problems it could be and whether expensive?

Regards

Thanks for the replies. At least it gives me some ideas as to what it might be. The garage couldn't find anything wrong when they looked. I'll have to point these things out to them! Why does it often seem that we have to do the mechanic's job for them?

Cheers

oooooooh dont get me on that topic.... it makes you laugh when you diagnose the problem yourself and there adamant your wrong. THEN when they do, do there job properly and stop replacing parts that are not needed, Your right all along grrrrrrr been there got the t-shirt :aargh4:
Not all mecahnics are like that but you get the odd cowboy LOL

Good luck hope you get it all sorted :p :beerchug:

Yes, first thing i checked. Have been caught out before when the wheel nearly fell off my MR2 after forgetting to tighten it.

Cheers.

Hi everybody!

I recon it will definately be your bushes, my golf moneypit had exactly the same probs, bushes were about 4 quid each from ********, not too hard a job to replace, peace ensued (till the next bit broke!) :D

it could also be your wishbone bushes. there are a couple of suspension components which are common for failure, the Anti Roll bar bushes being the (probably) most common, then the wishbone bushes (may as well replace the entire wishbone for the ball ache it is to replace just the bush)

think yourself lucky there is no knocking from the rear, often the rear suspension bushes which is not a small job to do :(

i very much doubt it is your shockers, but the easiest way to quickly check this, is to press down on the car and let go, the car should settle after 1/2 bounces, any more and there is a possibility you have a leaky shocker. you'd also notice this going over speed bumps from the inside.

if it's your bushes, you'll notice an audible knocking, they don't tend to affect the handling too much, but best to get these done asap.

if it's the wishbone/bushes, you'll notice the handling tends to get a little slack around corners more than anything and your braking will be slightly affected too, it's hard to describe but as you're coming to a stop, if travelling slowly enough for someone to observe, you will notice the body continues to travel a few mm/cm when the wheels have come to rest....

Hi. Thanks for your detailed description and to the other people who have posted. From what you say I am pretty sure it is the anti-roll bar bushes as the handling or braking is not affected. One last thing, am I best to replace the arb's to both sides at the same time and I suppose it is best to get new ones rather than secondhand? Regards.

Is the knock hard or kind of soft?

It could be the wish bone arm. Sometimes, well i think on rare occasions a bolt on the wishbone can become slightly loose. By slightly i mean very slightly it may seem tight but it has to be very tight....

If it feels like it's coming from under your feet inspect the ARB bushes - this was the case for me last year. Now my strut top mountings are knocking and the bearings in them are seizing - great

mine doing same, quite loud, sounded expensive. ARB bushes had it but told need a roll bar, looks like polybushes from some where.don't mind now i know its not going to fall apart as noise is rather worrying

My Bora is knocking too and its driving me crazy , glad i have a load stereo . I have changed the top strut mounts and a wishbone , this has not cured it . I did however notice that when the car was driven after being jacked up the knock had vanished , but it soon returned once everything had settled back in . I hope you cure it , just remember to let us know , lucky few knockers.
